Thomas Crampton: Telling WAN-IFRA how it really is

Today in Kuala Lumpur, former International Herald Tribune journalist Thomas Crampton will address the newly merged industry body WAN-IFRA in a keynote speech on social media.

But Crampton says the crowd is unlikely to welcome what he says, because:

1) He hasn’t bought a print copy of the International Herald Tribune since he left his job with the title two years ago;

2) In his new job at Ogilvy, he advises clients on why they no longer need to go through the media;

3) He believes the downward slide for newspapers is going to get steeper still;

4) Businesses based on ‘chewing dead trees’ aren’t feasible in this age of environmental concern.

Crampton also responds to some comments left on the post, in particular stating that he isn’t dismissing the value of journalism. FT scoops six prizes at SOPA awards

The Financial Times’ Chinese-language website, FTChinese.com, took the prize for best feature writing at the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards last night.

The site was one of six winners for the FT, which also took home gongs for newspaper design, digital journalism (for reporting on China and the Olympics) and scoop of the year.

FTChinese.com’s winning effort was an article on 30 years of reforms in China.

The title’s Mumbai correspondent, Joe Leahy, was also named journalist of the year at the event.

A full list of the award winners, which also saw the International Herald Tribune and Newsweek recognised, can be downloaded at this link.

Mediactive: Protecting your online archive of work

Dan Gillmor weighs in on an issue raised by former New York Times and International Herald Tribune writer Thomas Crampton, whose back catalogue of IHT articles online seems to have been deleted during the merger of the title’s website with that of the Times.

“Changing the URL structure of websites is a too-common event. Even if, as is the case most of the time, the originals are still around, disappearing the links is tantamount to hiding the original material,” writes Gillmor.

“The point is that I no longer rely entirely on the good graces of other people, including employers, to preserve what I’ve created, much less keep it available for you to see. I try to rely on myself.”

Gawker: NYTimes falls foul of Google with IHT.com fold

IHT.com: ‘The globalisation of censorship’ via libel tourism

“How are a few extraordinarily wealthy individuals from the most senior ranks of the world’s most brutally repressive societies succeeding in muzzling free speech on major international issues? The unlikely answer is, simply, by ‘visiting’ London”, writes Christopher Walker at the International Herald Tribune.

“An increasing number of well-heeled litigants – libel tourists – are using England’s plaintiff-friendly libel laws to silence critics. Unlike American law, which sets a high bar for libel lawsuits, English common law puts the burden of proof on the defendant, who can be hit with enormous damages and legal costs,” Walker reports.

paidContent:UK: IHT.com will keep its own identity on NYTimes.com site

Forbes.com originally reported the site would shut down, but that is not the case, Vivian Schiller, SVP and GM of NYTimes.com told paidContent. “The idea is to have one big global brand under one roof,” she said, stressing that IHT content would be co-branded and feature IHT specific content.
