(Not) speaking Dutch: new English language website launches with a Netherlands theme

NRC Handelsblad launched an English language website this week… for people with an interest in the Netherlands and its news.

As a press release published at MarketWatch said, the new website will target foreigners who cannot read Dutch, but are interested in Dutch ‘quality journalism’.

News, features and opinion will be published daily, reflecting domestic issues, and looking at international news that impacts the Netherlands.

There will be a discussion forum, concentrating on current affairs, to which well-known Dutch nationals will contribute.

Nrc.nl/international is a collaboration with German site Spiegel Online, which has existing partnerships with the International Herald Tribune, BusinessWeek and the New York Times.

The site is also linked to DutchNews.nl, the work of two British journalists. The editors of DutchNews.nl will translate and edit articles for Nrc.nl/international.

International Herald Tribune launches iPhone site

IHT.com has developed a version of the site for iPhone users. The version is ‘iPhone optimised’ rather than being an iPhone app – e.g. an application built exclusively for the iPhone – co-creator Michael Cosentino is keen to point out in a blog post.

Last week the New York Times announced plans to develop an application for the Apple device.

International news website planned by US media veteran

The founder of one of America’s largest regional news networks is to launch a website dedicated to international news.

Philip Balboni, who established the New England Cable News (NECN) in the US, will resign from his post as NECN president in March to launch Global News Enterprises in early 2009.

The site aims to have correspondents in nearly 70 countries, a press release from NECN said.

According to a report in the International Herald Tribune, $7 million (around £3.5 million) has been raised to fund the news site.

“The world in every respect is globalizing, and we’re being swept up in it with the economy, our lives, our leisure times, our children’s education. And the American people are not being well-served by our media. The moment is right for this,” Balboni told the Tribune.

Revamped Reuters business section on IHT.com goes live

Last month we reported that Reuters and the International Herald Tribune were partnering to revamp the IHT’s financial news offering online and launch a daily co-branded world business report in the newspaper.

The new section of the IHT.com site – renamed Business with Reuters – has gone live today and features news analysis and comment from IHT, Reuters and New York Times business writers and columnists.

New York Times after Reuters business news too?

Times Online is reporting that the NY Times is in talks about taking business news from Reuters in a deal similar to that which stablemate International Herald Tribune announced yesterday.

Times Online stated:

“The tie-ups are designed to augment both titles’ business coverage, in an attempt to fend off the competitive threat from The Wall Street Journal , which is due to be acquired by News Corporation, the parent company of The Times, this week.”

And later:

“Mr Oreskes [Mike Oreskes, editor-in-chief of the IHT],confirmed that there were “ongoing discussions” about a separate agreement to supply business news to The New York Times.”

Hope redundancies aren’t in the offing as a result…
