FT scoops six prizes at SOPA awards

The Financial Times’ Chinese-language website, FTChinese.com, took the prize for best feature writing at the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards last night.

The site was one of six winners for the FT, which also took home gongs for newspaper design, digital journalism (for reporting on China and the Olympics) and scoop of the year.

FTChinese.com’s winning effort was an article on 30 years of reforms in China.

The title’s Mumbai correspondent, Joe Leahy, was also named journalist of the year at the event.

Fairfax Media to launch political and national affairs journalism site

Fairfax Media is planning to launch a new website focusing on political and national affairs journalism, according to a press release.

The nationaltimes.com.au site resurrects Fairfax’s National Times brand, which was published from 1971 to 1986 as a weekly print title.

The site, which will feature aggregated content from smh.com.au, theage.com.au, brisbanetimes.com.au and watoday.com.au and be accessible from these sites, will go live in August.

“The National Times brand was synonymous with intelligent and thought-provoking journalism,” said Brian McCarthy, CEO and managing director, in the release.

“It informed and encouraged debate on the important issues of the day and that will be the commitment of our new online site.

“The best of our opinion writing, commentary and analysis will be aggregated on the site and I believe it will be a beacon for all those people with an interest in politics, policy and current affairs.”

Big Yellow Self Storage seeks digitally savvy media graduates

Following on from Journalism.co.uk’s recent report on Lucozade’s search for a reporter skilled in social media, comes news that Big Yellow Self Storage is running a similar internship programme.

The firm is looking for web savvy recent graduates or undergraduates with journalism or new media related degrees for a paid internship on the company’s online communications team, according to a release.

Willing participants should create a video of just 12 seconds explaining why they’re right for the job and post it to a video-sharing site (e.g. YouTube or Flickr), tagged with ‘intern search’, ‘Big Yellow’ and ‘self storage’.

The closing date for entries is June 13 and the winner will be announced on June 29.

“The student job market has become increasingly competitive, even more so in the current economic climate – that’s why we’d like to offer one lucky individual the chance to cut their razor sharp social media teeth with our marketing team in London,” said Rob Strachan, head of sales and marketing at Big Yellow Group, in the release.

“It’s our way of helping out our industry’s undergraduates and recent graduates find their feet.”

‘Blood, Sweat and Media’ – BCU graduates exhibit final projects

Birmingham City University’s School of Media will exhibit final projects from its media and communications students at an event this week – viewing on June 11 for media professionals; public view on June 12 – at Fazeley Street Studios in Birmingham.

The event will highlight the skills and abilities acquired by this year’s graduates during the three-year course.

Students will show their final year production projects from their specialist areas, which include television, radio, PR, journalism, photography, new media and music industries.

“I think this is a good opportunity to make ourselves known to the media industry and to meet potential professionals who are interested in our work,” says Mohammed Adnan (final year student on the media and communication degree).
