Associated Newspapers claim monthly reach of 22 million

Associated Newspapers websites and print editions claim to reach a combined audience of 22 million adults a month – 45 per cent of all adults in Great Britain, according to figures released by the group’s digital division today.

The survey of 60,000 readers, which was conducted across Associated Northcliffe Digital’s (AND) network of 38 websites, used a questionnaire to profile the age, online behaviour and print reading habits of respondents.

Those polled were also questioned about specific subject areas of the larger sites to investigate how users differ between these sections.

The information gathered will be used to create advertising campaigns relevant to several sites or areas, a press release from the company said.

The final figures were produced by Survey Interactive, which is also involved in developing a new audience measurement tool for Trinity Mirror’s websites.

Speaking to Journalism.co.uk last month, Guy Lipscombe, managing director of Survey Interactive, said the polling technology can give figures on the ‘unduplicated reach’ of a title – the number of unique users to a site who do not also read a print edition.

The system, he said, is based on ‘measuring the people not computers’ who view a site, preventing duplicate records as a person accesses a site across a range of devices.

However, it is unclear as to how information would be gathered to disregard users that read both the print and online versions. Wouldn’t it be more interesting to see these ‘unduplicated’ stats?

Portfolio: WSJ quietly making big traffic strides

Even with a firewall blocking access to large parts of the site for non-subscribers, traffic is still growing at a most impressive for the WSJ – according to its own claims.

According to internal numbers, WSJ.com hosted 15 million unique visitors in March, reports Portfolio, a 175 percent increase over March 2007, Alan Murray, executive editor of the Wall Street Journal Online told it.

Page views came in at around 165 million, up 75 percent year-over-year.

More analytics for YouTube

More analytics are now available from YouTube following the recent introduction of its YouTube Insight feature.

The video site has added a tool to help users see viewing trends for their clips.

Information on how viewers came to their video (e.g. through a search engine or other website) and what search queries led them to it will be provided.

The Insight service will now show the links of up to 50 external websites directing viewers to videos, a post on YouTube’s own blog says.

Thisismoney.co.uk claims record readership

Associated Newspaper’s financial news website This is Money is claiming to have hit a record readership last month.

Quoting internal traffic data, staff claim that nearly 1.2 million people used the site in March 2008, clicking on more than nine million pages.

Staff said the unique user figure (1,166,561) represents a 30 per cent year-on-year traffic rise and a month-on-month increase of nearly 20 per cent – with February see 978,000 visitors.

Andrew Oxlade, editor, told Journalism.co.uk: “The March to April period is crucial to financial websites as millions of savers make decisions about Isas before the end of the annual deadline on 5 April.

“We’re also seeing a surge of interest from people concerned about the health of banks and the safety of their savings. Vivasex.ch Borrowers are also worried about their ability to find a new mortgage deal and are hunting around for views on whether the value of their home will fall this year.”

Google launches measurement tool for YouTube videos

Google has launched YouTube Insight – a new measurement tool for YouTube users, which will provide stats on the videos they upload.

According to an announcement on the Official Google Blog, uploaders of videos to the site will be able to see figures and graphs of:

  • how often their videos are viewed by geographic region;
  • how popular their contributions are compared to other videos in that area;
  • ‘the lifecycle of a video’ e.g. how long it takes for a clip to gain popularity.

The metrics, says the blog, makes YouTube ‘one of the world’s largest focus groups’ and could be of use to advertisers and content providers in evaluating the benefits of the platform.

Below is a screenshot of how the figures, which can be seen in the ‘My Account’ section of the site, are displayed:

NY Gov. Spitzer prostitution ring story crashes NYT website

A huge traffic surge in response to a story broken by the NYTimes.com alleging New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was a client of a high-end prostitution ring, caused the newspaper website to crash yesterday.

According to Huffingtonpost.com, the website went offline for a period yesterday afternoon as readers raced to read allegations about the governor.

NYT spokesperson Diane McNulty told Huff Post that between 2-4 pm (Eastern US time) traffic was 60 per cent higher than at the same time last Monday. NYT mobile almost doubled its traffic for the same period.

Considering the amount of traffic that would have been generated by last week’s primaries for the Democratic candidate, yesterday must have been a pretty heavy day.

Welt.de posts record traffic for February

WELT Online – the website of German Newspaper Die Welt – attracted record traffic figures last month, according to a press release from parent company Axel Springer AG.

The site recorded 137 million page views in February, a rise of around 10 per cent from 124 million in January, and 19 million unique users compared to 16 million in January.

The new figures put the site ahead of rival news sites Focus, which recorded 16 million unique users over the same period, and n-de.tv – 15 million unique users, the release said.
