Indiana Star uses time-lapse photography to beat video rules
US newspaper The Indiana Star is using ‘time-lapse’ photography to overcome a rule that precludes websites not affiliated with the NFL from showing footage of American football matches.
Speaking to the Associated Press Photo Managers, the paper has experimented using a still camera and motor drive bursts – which allow shots to be taken in quick succession. These images are then put together using Quicktime to create ‘a video-like experience’, the report says.
The Quicktime-packaged shots are combined with video of post-match press conferences and audio from fans and the ground before the game.

CNET.co.uk attracts record audience
Consumer technology site CNET.co.uk recorded its highest ever audience last year, according to figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCe).
Page impressions for the site in during November rose to 18,079,527 – a 156 per cent increase on the same figures taken during November 2006.
In the same month the site attracted 2,539,283 unique users – an increase of 1,195,836 unique users (89 per cent) from the figure recorded in November 2006.
“This audit confirms our leading position in the highly competitive consumer technology space. Our huge growth is testament to the high quality and breadth of content on the site, together with our groundbreaking interactive resources,” said Jason Jenkins, editor of CNET.co.uk, in a press release from CNET Networks UK.
The positive figures for CNET.co.uk came as the site’s US parent company CNET announced it had signed severance packages with several of its board members. According to a report on Paid Content, Joseph Gillespie, executive vice-president of CNET’s business unit, among others, have signed the agreements, which include compensation for a change in control of the company. The report suggests that this clause is included to address a possible takeover bid by a consortium of investors.
Manchester Evening News launches interactive traffic map
The Manchester Evening News has augmented its first use of interactive Google Maps with a new addition detailing traffic congestion and roadworks across the city.
The newspaper is using information on bottlenecks and traffic build-ups sourced from the readership to construct maps of problem areas.
The traffic map follows the addition of the Manchester Evening News Murder Map, an interactive feature detailing all the killings across the city since 1999.
The murder map was seemingly inspired by the groundbreaking crime maps used by newspaper in the US. ChicagoCrime.org and LA Times.com homicide map were amongst the first to take advantage of easily accessible public information on crime in the US.
Nokia mobiles gets a multimedia blog publishing application
Telewaving is today launching Wavelog, an application that allows users to post multimedia content directly from Nokia mobile phones to blogs.
The Wavelog system works with s60, the software run on smart Nokia multimedia phones like the N95.
According to the developers the software, which was developed and tested on Nokia N95 mobile phones posting to the WordPress, can run on any blogging platform.
The system sounds similar to the software developed by Nokia and Reuters for their mobile journalism project.
That system allowed journalists to upload multimedia reports from their N95 phones to a back-end WordPress blog that desk editors would then have access to.
The Telewaving system is also able to upload text, images, audio, and video and is able to upload over any network connection (this may just be US networks, though).
Miami Herald cancels editorial outsourcing
US daily newspaper the Miami Herald has dropped plans to outsource part of its production operations to India.
Owners the McClatchy Company have backed down on the move to outsource the Herald’s regional Broward Neighbors section, because it would remove ‘news judgement’ from the process.
“We’ve decided this would not be an appropriate use of this service so it won’t be tested, nor will other newsroom and editing design like it,” a memo from Anders Gyllenhaal, Miami Herald executive editor, is reported as saying in a report on MiamiHerald.com.

Myfootballwriter.com: a lesson in going online

In May, Rick Waghorn, founder of sports news website myfootballwriter.com, is hoping to attend a Las Vegas awards ceremony and hear whether his plans for sports news sites in the US will receive $2 million as part of the Knight News Challenge.
Yet, before the potential glitz and glamour of Vegas, myfootballwriter.com will compete in the EDF Energy East of England media awards (award ceremony: Whipsnade Zoo).
The site is in the running for the Website of the Year award and comes up against the site of Waghorn’s former employer, the Norwich Evening News, who after 14 years handed Waghorn a redundancy package and the financial – and personal – impetus to go it alone online.
Having started as a sports news site dedicated to Norwich City FC, myfootballwriter.com has since spawned an Ipswich Town site and in a recent recruitment drive attracted more than 70 young journalists to apply for reporting positions on new sites.
While the eveningnews24 site should be applauded for investing in its online operations, that myfootballwriter is competing directly against it is a case study in favour of the changing shape of the industry.
The site has used its online-only status – with no backing from a print product such as the Norwich Evening News or the same size editorial team – to its advantage: rolling deadlines mean rolling news coverage, while being dedicated to one locality and subject allows for more in-depth analysis and reporting.
What is more, Waghorn says he is still ‘a footsoldier’, attending matches and press conferences, filing reports and chasing transfer rumours. At the same time he can develop and innovate with the site – as he is doing with the plans to move into the US and the development of a locally-focused advertising system.
Waghorn stresses that he has by no means ‘cracked it’, yet what he has achieved so far should be used as an aspirational model by both his former paymasters at Archant and the rest of the print media in their attempts to ‘crack’ the online medium.
NYTimes.com launches Polling Place Photo Project and asks users to submit
NYTimes.com has launched the Polling Place Photo Project, its bid to document the election year with photos taken by its readers.
The Times is asking for submissions of every polling location in America during the 2008 primaries and general election, so that it can compile an archive of voting in the US.
Images of the New Hampshire primaries have already been uploaded to the developing site.
NBC provides code to embed news shows
From Wednesday news show clips from US broadcaster NBC will be offered as embeddable codes, according to a report from beet.tv.
As the beet.tv article points out, while such codes are offered for Reuters videos and videos on the Wall Street Journal website, this is the first time a major US network news operation has opted for this method of sharing content.
