CNET News: Journalist shield law may not prevent iPhone prototype investigation

Over in the US the iPhone prototype drama continues, as Gawker Media challenges the legality of the search warrant served on Gizmodo editor Jason Chen, last Friday. Gawker’s Gizmodo site had received an iPhone 4G protoype and revealed its features online. As CNet reported:

Police have seized computers and servers belonging to an editor of Gizmodo in an investigation that appears to stem from the gadget blog’s purchase of a lost Apple iPhone prototype.

Gawker claimed the search warrant was invalid under a part of California law. This part of the law, CNET reported, ” prevents judges from signing warrants that target writers for newspapers, magazines, or ‘other periodical publications.'”

But yesterday CNET reported that Gizmodo might not be protected by journalist shield law after all.

If Gizmodo editors are, in fact, a target of a criminal probe into the possession or purchase of stolen property, the search warrant served on editor Jason Chen on Friday appears valid. A blog post at NYTimes.com on Monday, citing unnamed law enforcement officials, said charges could be filed against the buyer of the prototype 4G phone – meaning Gizmodo.

Yahoo! and CNET enter partnership to reach new audiences

Yahoo And CNET Networks have entered into a three-year partnership covering content, advertising and search marketing.

The partnership will extend the reach of both companies, as they give each other access to a huge new audience.

CNET Networks, with brands including Download.com, GameSpot, TV.com and CHOW, will provide Yahoo with technology content for Yahoo Tech and Yahoo News, including news stories, reviews and video.

CNET expects to increase its ‘brand reach’ by tens of millions of people in this way on US Yahoo sites alone.

“This announcement builds on our strategy to be the partner of choice for leading internet publishers looking to maximize their revenue potential and audience engagement,” said Todd Teresi, senior vice president of the Yahoo Publisher Channel, in a press release.

CNET advertisers will be able to target CNET users while they are on the Yahoo network, and the company can offer its marketers advertising options on the video content it provides to Yahoo.

CNET.co.uk attracts record audience

Consumer technology site CNET.co.uk recorded its highest ever audience last year, according to figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCe).

Page impressions for the site in during November rose to 18,079,527 – a 156 per cent increase on the same figures taken during November 2006.

In the same month the site attracted 2,539,283 unique users – an increase of 1,195,836 unique users (89 per cent) from the figure recorded in November 2006.

“This audit confirms our leading position in the highly competitive consumer technology space. Our huge growth is testament to the high quality and breadth of content on the site, together with our groundbreaking interactive resources,” said Jason Jenkins, editor of CNET.co.uk, in a press release from CNET Networks UK.

The positive figures for CNET.co.uk came as the site’s US parent company CNET announced it had signed severance packages with several of its board members. According to a report on Paid Content, Joseph Gillespie, executive vice-president of CNET’s business unit, among others, have signed the agreements, which include compensation for a change in control of the company. The report suggests that this clause is included to address a possible takeover bid by a consortium of investors.
