Photo Attorney: Who is right in the Fairey vs AP Obama photo case?

As reported by various sources (including the AP) the AP has made a claim against artist Shepard Fairey for use of its photograph: the AP says it owns the copyright, and wants credit and compensation. Fairey’s defence claims that the use is permitted through ‘fair use.’

The Associated Press: Google updates search index with old magazines

Google has added magazines to its internet search engine, AP reports.

“As part of its quest to corral more content published on paper, Google Inc. has made digital copies of more than 1 million articles from magazines that hit the news-stands decades ago.”

NYTimes.com: CNN offering cheaper wire service

After cable news election success for the channel, CNN is now looking to cater for those newspapers who find wire services too expensive. The New York Times reports that editors from about 30 papers will visit Atlanta to hear about CNN’s plans to broaden its service.

Editor&Publisher: Carole Feldman to lead convergence at AP’s Washington bureau

The assistant chief of bureau for the AP in Washington will be responsible for ‘the convergence of text, broadcast and online formats’ in the bureau.

Prior to her current post, which she has held for five years, Feldman was the AP’s Washington news editor.

AP to stream live video on US election night for first time

According to a press release from the Associated Press (AP), the agency will embark on its first continuous, live video news coverage on US election night, November 4.

The Big Issue: Election Results stream will feature a host of AP reports and will be streamed from 7pm (EST) on the agency’s online video network.

The stream will include views from 10 non-journalists, representing the electorate, who have been selected from AP’s collaboration with Yahoo to track the changing attitudes of 2,000 American voters during the presidential campaigns.

“We recognize that this is a once in a quarter century election,” said Michael Oreskes, AP managing editor for US News.

“Through the course of the year we have dug deeply into the dynamics of race and gender and economic fears that are suffusing the electorate. Our pre-election AP-Yahoo! News poll assessing the impact of racial attitudes on the electorate is being cited as the prime source on the issue this year. We plan to carry this work into our preparations for election night.”

Traffic success for AP’s mobile news network

The Associated Press‘ mobile news network – launched by the agency in May – attracted 16 million page views in August, according to a report from MediaBistro.com.

The post states that 95 per cent of traffic to the network is generated by iPhone and iPod touch users.

The network, which features national news from the AP and local content from regional news organisations, now boasts 948 partners.

Local advertising on the service is sold by the news organisations, in addition to national advertising from networks, with any revenues split between news providers and ad sellers
