BeatBlogging.Org puts out a call for all journalists on Twitter
US-based site BeatBlogging.org is collecting names of journalists who use Twitter to “help report, find sources, ask questions and more”.
Beatblogging.org is part of NewAssignment.Net, and is on a mission to look at “how journalists can use social networks and other Web tools to improve beat reporting, with an empahsis on “pushing the practice” and spotlighting innovation”, according to the site’s authors.
They have 57 responses so far, mostly US-based. So how about we get a UK thing going here? HtFP: Newspaper editor with MBE made redundant
John Butterworth, group editor of Shropshire Newspaper’s weekly series (part of the Midland News Association), was made redundant yesterday, according to HoldtheFrontPage’s Tamlyn Jones. The 55-year-old has a journalistic career spanning 36 years and was awarded an MBE a year ago for services to journalism and various charities. Full story…

1981: ‘Imagine turning on your home computer to read the day’s newspaper’

“This is an experiment,” David Cole of the SF Examiner says. “We’re trying to figure out what it’s going to mean to us, as editors and reporters and what it means to the home user. And we’re not in it to make money, we’re probably not going to lose a lot but we aren’t going to make much either.”

Nielsen Online release: Web traffic to top 10 US newspapers grew 16 per cent last year
Nielsen Online, a service of The Nielsen Company, today reported a 16 per cent year-on-year increase in unique visitors to the top 10 newspaper Web sites, growing from 34.6 million unique visitors in December 2007 to 40.1 million in December 2008.
NYTimes.com was the number one online newspaper destination in December 2008, with 18.2 million unique visitors. USATODAY.com and washingtonpost.com took the second and third spots, with 11.4 million and 9.5 million unique visitors, respectively. Download PDF release
