Citizen Media Law Project: ‘Thou shalt not use multimedia in vain’

Inspired by PBS MediaShift’s Mark Glazier, Courtney French looks at multimedia done badly, illustrated by a variety of examples.

“Most reporters today have been told in newsrooms and in journalism schools that they need to incorporate audio and video into their storytelling. And with the help of graphic and web designers they can put together some really amazing stuff. But reaching the ‘smart multimedia’ point can be tough, especially since the line between too little multimedia and multimedia overkill is so subjective.”

The Editorialiste: ‘New media reality check’ for new journalists

Andrew Nusca shares his thoughts on the new media skills needed by modern day journalists:

“As new media has increased in popularity and usage, this myth has populated of the multi-talented reporter – you know, the one carrying all the gear a few paragraphs back. And while it’s certainly an ideal, it’s not a necessity. In fact, it’s barely a reality.”

He follows this with some very useful advice for journalists entering the profession:

“For most online journalism, all you need to know is how to blog and how to use a CMS, or content management system.”

John Welsh: Seven tips for conference 2.0

John Welsh’s latest tips offer guidance for making the most of web applications while participating in a digital conference. And for number seven, he goes old-school:

“Do some traditional note taking. Most delegates spend every session with their heads over a laptop, interacting with the speakers online. It is very addictive. But you are far less likely to walk out with decent notes or even listen properly. So, just occasionally, close down the laptop, shut off the mobile device, ignore the Twitter feed and open a notebook instead.”

BBCJournalismLabs: A data project with a ‘human face’

Bella Hurrell updates on the BBC’s development of a ‘UK fatalities in Afghanistan and Iraq’ data interactive.

Originally a list of names, it then became a sortable table. Hurrell writes:

“This was followed by a dynamic visualisation of the figures in Flash. Last week we added the In Pictures page, which is an aggregation of thumbnail images of all those who have been killed in the conflicts.

“This latest page strengthens the coverage, adding another dimension that makes it far more personal, rather than purely a functional way to view the raw data.”

Adam Westbrook: Shooting multimedia in Iraq – lessons learned

Managing the kit was one big probleim foor Adam Westbrook when he went to cover the First Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment in Baghdad for his radio station. “But juggling equipment isn’t the only problem for a multimedia shooter, I learned. The big challenge is juggling content,” Westbrook comments. His observations and tips for multimedia journalists in the field.

Website changes for PA on its 140th anniversary

To mark its 140th anniversary, the Press Association has ‘completely overhauled its identity in print and online to reflect its position as an innovative, digital, news and information provider,’ a release said.

To signify its move from a domestic news agency to a ‘multimedia content business’, all of the existing Press Association sub-brands will now be ‘unified’.

The URL of the PA website has changed to pressassociation.co.uk and the release said that the new site ‘incorporates improved usability, multimedia news feeds, picture galleries and demo packages demonstrating the range of the company’s services,’ although most content is still restricted to paying subscribers.

“By sharpening up the brand and introducing a new website we aim to increase our brand awareness amongst B2B customers and make it easier for us to showcase our services, particularly to the digital markets,” Paul Potts, executive chairman and owner of the PA Group, said in the release.
