Guardian relaunches blogs and commenting features

The Guardian is moving its blogs onto its new platform, bringing them in line with the rest of the recently redesigned site.

The move will be completed in two stages starting with 14 titles, including its Lost in Showbiz and news blogs, an announcement on the Inside Guardian blog said. The remaining sites will move over next month.

Once switched the blogs will boast new colours and design features (see the right-hand screenshot below), including improved navigation and links to the rest of Guardian.co.uk.

Keywords linking blog posts to related content across the site will be added – a feature previously unavailable on the blogs platform.

Blogs will also be relocated to their sections – e.g. the politics blog in the politics channel – rather than housed in a separate blogs section.

The new blogs will also share features introduced across the rest of the redesigned site, including the option to share posts by Digg, del.icio.us etc, and a widget showing the most-linked to Guardian content.

Blog posts will now also be included in the site’s search.

Changes to the commenting function on the site’s blogs have also been made – the biggest change being the introduction of user profiles.

“For a long time, we and many other sites operated a content-driven model which meant that user comments were only associated with – and displayed alongside – a particular content item. The creation of user profiles reveals our growing community-driven approach, recognising that just as every guardian.co.uk author gets a contributor page in which their contributions are archived so that their participation can be explored across topics and over time, so should our users,” said Meg Pickard, head of communities and user experience for Guardian.co.uk, in a blog post

Additional features will be added to user profiles over time, added Pickard, and experiments with the layout of comments beneath blog posts are ongoing.

Basic formatting, such as creating block quotes and links, is also now possible on blog post comments.

The new features have previously been trialled on the site’s Comment Is Free platform and use social media firm Pluck’s commenting technology.

CNET relaunches GameSpot website

CNET UK has relaunched gaming website GameSpot to include an embedded video player and a wider page layout.

Navigation on the site has also been improved with the introduction of links to relevant content elsewhere on the site on the right-hand side of the page.

To increase user interaction a new community section has been introduced. The Community Hub will ‘showcase’ user-generated content and gaming events, and act as a central point for the site’s forum users.

The site currently attracts more than 3.5 million users, a press release from CNET said.

Newspaper Society: Belfast Telegraph sees traffic surge after online revamp

The Belfast Telegraph recorded a 29 per cent week-on-week growth in traffic to its website following a relaunch of the site on July 14.

As part of the redesign the Telegraph is now using a tri-site platform: it will feature content from sister titles the Independent and the Irish Independent.

New comment functions on articles have also been added to increase interactivity with users.

Associated Press launches celebrity news service

The Associated Press (AP) has launched a celebrity news service to expand its coverage of entertainment news.

Celebrity Extra, which includes video footage, is the result of a multi-million dollar investment by the agency, a press release from AP said.

New staff have been hired to work on the service and new video production technology has been bought for its Los Angeles, New York and London bureaux.

A photo version of the service will launch in September.

Imagine Publishing launches user-focused gaming site

Imagine Publishing has launched a website for fans of its Retro Gamer magazine.

Retrogamer.net
lets users upload their own game reviews and ratings, with a pick of the contributions selected to appear in the magazine’s print edition.

A forum, team blog and a game buying guide are also features of the new site.

News of the World launches website redesign in beta

The News of the World has launched a beta version of its website redesign.

The version is being used to test the new look, which introduces a slightly wider page size, an overhead navigation bar and a reduced left-hand navigation menu.

The redesign brings NOTW.co.uk more in line with the recently revamped Sun website.

The ‘below the fold’ section of the homepage is significantly tidier with less content, stronger section headings and clearer dividing lines between them.

A section devoted to six of the best stories from the NOTW’s archive also makes its debut on the right-hand side of the homepage – a feature that used in varying ways across the site’s sections.

Usurping the current ‘sell your story for cash’ ad, is the site’s enhanced video player, which no longer launches in a separate window.

The video player looks striking with its black background and cleaner with a reduced number of content tabs. A built-in video search tool is a welcome addition. Video isn’t yet embedded into the site’s article pages.

There’s more depth to the new design: news, sport and other sections have their own pages and a presence away from the homepage.

TATLER launches Russian edition

CondeNast’s TATLER is to launch a Russian edition later this month.

TATLER Russia will be available from August 21 and will have an estimated print circulation of 120,000, a press release from the publisher said.

Haymarket revamps audio-visual industry site AVinteractive

Haymarket’s title for the audio-visual industry AV has relaunched its website to create a more multimedia resource for readers.

AVinteractive has been fitted out with a new forum and blogs, as well as a commenting function on all articles.

Online polls are another new feature on the site’s homepage and a video channel, RSS news feed and improved site search have also been added.

The redesign was completed in-house by Haymarket.

Mirror.co.uk joins competitors with homepage redesign

Not wanting to be left out following a new look for The Sun’s homepage last Friday, a Telegraph.co.uk redesign and the last stage of the Guardian’s site revamp, Mirror.co.uk began its relaunch on Monday.

Starting with changes to the homepage, the rest of the site will follow suit and new features will be introduced in the coming weeks, an announcement on the site said.

On the homepage a most read/most emailed/highest rated articles box has been added and the left-hand navigation bar done away with. Links to Mirror.co.uk subscription services are neatly lined up across the top of the homepage.

Elsewhere the site’s video player has been upgraded (though the ‘see more videos’ tab opens up another window still), more picture galleries added and the blogs section overhauled with some new additions.

So how does this first stage of redevelopment compare with its competitor’s new looks?

It’s certainly colourful with the addition of multicoloured section headings and if you navigate better with images than this is for you – though personally I find the block of images that dominate the ‘above the fold’ area a tad too busy.

More embedded video, which seems to be happening across the article pages, is a plus, as is the vastly improved ‘below the fold’ on the homepage, which has been tidied up no end.
