SFN Blog: Independent News & Media trials paid content on Irish regionals

Last week Independent News & Media (INM) introduced a new freemium model to 13 of its regional newspaper websites in Ireland.

Much content on the sites will remain free, but charges will be introduced for iPhone apps, digital editions and online subscriptions, where there will be a choice between micropayments per article, bundles and time-based subscriptions.

FT.com: Standard’s Lebedev renews talks with Independent

Alexander Lebedev, the Russian owner of the London Evening Standard, has resumed talks with Independent News & Media (INM) about buying its UK national newspapers.

According to FT sources, the discussion has been restated after it was initially put on hold over the summer while INM focused on restructuring its £1.2 billion debt.

Reuters: Independent News&Media likely to agree bond extension, says source

Independent News & Media ‘will likely agree another extension to a standstill deal with holders of a 200 million euro ($283 million) bond originally due for repayment in May’, an industry source said, according to Reuters. It reported today:

“The Irish publishing group has until Aug. 27 to agree a deal with holders of the senior debt but the industry source, who declined to be named because talks are ongoing, said another rollover was inevitable as this month’s deadline looms.”

INM declined to comment, Reuters said.

Irish Times: Denis O’Brien may be ‘bypassed’ in IN&M bond deal

The latest on the Independent News & Media financial negotiations, as reported by the Irish Times:

“Bondholders in Independent News & Media (IN&M) are negotiating with the company on the resolution of an overdue €200 million note on the basis that key investor Denis O’Brien will not sign up to current proposals.”

Last month, in an interview with the Irish Sunday Times, O’Brien said that it was possible IN&M might go into bankruptcy protection.

NUJ Releases: New Statesman to discuss recognition / Irish NUJ urges Indy News&Media staff to resist wage cuts

Two more releases from the NUJ: the New Statesman is to meet to discuss NUJ recognition; and the the Irish Executive Council of the NUJ is urging members at Independent News and Media Plc not to sign up to a company-wide campaign to reduce wages.

Newspaper Society: Belfast Telegraph sees traffic surge after online revamp

The Belfast Telegraph recorded a 29 per cent week-on-week growth in traffic to its website following a relaunch of the site on July 14.

As part of the redesign the Telegraph is now using a tri-site platform: it will feature content from sister titles the Independent and the Irish Independent.

New comment functions on articles have also been added to increase interactivity with users.
