Yahoo News: Politico to launch new website and expand staff

Politico is set to expand its staff from 85 to a team of 100 following the US presidential elections with a string of editorial appointments.

The publisher will also increase its print run to four days when the US Congress is in session.

Reuters: EU investigating Google-Yahoo advertising deal

European Union anti-trust watchdogs are investigating the proposed advertising deal between Google and Yahoo, which would see the two companies share some ad revenue.

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has called on the EU to probe the tie-up, which Google and Yahoo have said would only come into force in the US and Canada.

WAN said the deal would affect Yahoo’s ability to compete with Google in the future.

Newscred picked up by Yahoo

Newscred, a site aimed at gauging the credibility of online news, is gaining momentum: a Twitter update from co-founder Shafqat Islam earlier this week said the site had been featured on Yahoo’s personalised homepage My Yahoo.

The service was featured as a daily recommendation from Yahoo for new apps to add to the homepage.

Islam said it was not part of a deal between the two companies, just a pleasant surprise.

Yahoo and Politico to offer inside view of Democrat and Republican conventions

Yahoo and POLITICO are to live stream a series of breakfast debates from the US Democratic and Republican National Conventions, which will be held in Denver in August and in St Paul in September respectively.

The panels will be moderated by Politico editors and will be open to convention attendees and the general public.

Local papers The Denver Post and St Paul Pioneer Press will also cover the events.

“It is hard to imagine more exciting partnerships at a more important time in this historic campaign. These events will offer politicians and the public access to unique and powerful audiences: the local community via the host newspapers, political enthusiasts via POLITICO and the world via Yahoo! News,” said John Harris, POLITICO editor-in-chief, in a press release.

Spot the difference: AFP withdraws ‘digitally altered’ missile shot

Agence France-Presse (AFP) has retracted a photo of Iranian missile tests published this morning, stating the image had been ‘apparently digitally altered’ by Iran’s state media, the New York Times’ Lede section reports.

It was too late for the print editions of the LA Times, Financial Times, Chicago Tribune and others, who ran the pic on the front page, and for the BBC, New York Times and Yahoo News websites.

Below – spot the difference between 1) the AFP’s image…

According to the Lede’s report, the agency said the fourth missile may have been added to mask a grounded missile that failed to launch during the test.

Getty teams up with Yahoo to tap into Flickr users

Getty Images is to collaborate with Yahoo-owned image-sharing site Flickr to harness the potential of the site’s members.

Through the partnership Getty will invite Flickr members to contribute their images to a ‘Flickr branded collection’ on the agency’s website. Pics in this collection will then be made available for licensing by Getty’s clients.

Editors from Getty will select the members and the two companies are currently working on online tools for contacting Flickr users.

Members who chose to submit their images to the collection will hand over exclusive commercial rights of the photos to Getty.

“Flickr members will benefit from Getty Images’ global sales and distribution teams helping to market their images and from Getty Images’ expertise and experience in rights and clearances of visual content. Getty Images’ customers will benefit from the fresh, unique and individualistic perspectives of members within Flickr’s global community,” a release from Yahoo said.

A launch date for the collection is yet to be announced.
