Digg teams up with CNN’s iReport for US convention interviews

Digg is working with CNN’s citizen journalism site iReport to allow users of the social bookmarking site to pose questions to members of the Democrat and Republican conventions taking place in the US over the next two weeks.

The Digg Dialogg feature, which will be used for the first time at the conventions, lets users submit text or video questions to be put to a particular interviewee. These are then ranked by other Digg users with the top 10 posed to the subject during a live interview.

The first candidate will be Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the US Democrats’ House of Representatives, said Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, in a blog post.

According to a release from CNN, the news organisation broke the one billion barrier for page views on its politics site, which was launched last September; while its blog, the CNN Political Ticker, recorded its highest ever traffic on August 22 with more than 2.7 milion page views – driven by the announcement of presidential candidate Barack Obama’s running mate.

Washington Post and Newsweek prepare websites for convention coverage

WashingtonPost.com and Newsweek.com are to use a combination of live streamed video from mobiles and ‘social media’ correspondents to cover this week’s Democrat convention and September’s Republican convention in the US.

According to a report from Poynter.org, the WaPo site will feature seven hours of live video content from the conventions a day.

Reporters for both sites will stream live coverage of the conventions using mobiles to a special Convention ’08 channel complete with a live discussion forum for readers, whose questions and comments will be fed back to reporters and interviewees.

A raft of ‘non-traditional’ correspondents will also feature on WaPo.com during the conventions including Ariana Huffington from The Huffington Post, Markos Moulitsas from Daily Kos and Steve Grove from YouTube.

Los Angeles Times appoints Eddy W. Hartenstein as publisher

The Los Angeles Times has named Eddy W. Hartenstein as its new publisher, the Associated Press (via the New York Times) has reported.

Hartenstein replaces David Hiller, who resigned from the post last month.

A former satellite television executive with DirecTV, Hartenstein has no experience in the newspaper industry.

Huffington Post local launches Chicago site

A beta version of the Huffington Post’s new site for Chicago has gone live.

The site is the first of a potential dozen local Huffington Post sites set for launch and will aggregate news for Chicago from local sources and posts from local bloggers.

Local information, such as crime stats, events listings and nightclub opening hours, will also feature in a ‘rotating at-a-glance’ way, said editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington in an introduction to the new site.

“Transferring The Huffington Post’s blend of news, opinion, and community – delivered with our familiar look and attitude – to a local level, HuffPost Chicago is part local news source, part resource guide, and part virtual soap box,” said Huffington.

The site will be edited by Ben Goldberger, a former reporter with the Chicago Sun-Times.

Yahoo and Politico to offer inside view of Democrat and Republican conventions

Yahoo and POLITICO are to live stream a series of breakfast debates from the US Democratic and Republican National Conventions, which will be held in Denver in August and in St Paul in September respectively.

The panels will be moderated by Politico editors and will be open to convention attendees and the general public.

Local papers The Denver Post and St Paul Pioneer Press will also cover the events.

“It is hard to imagine more exciting partnerships at a more important time in this historic campaign. These events will offer politicians and the public access to unique and powerful audiences: the local community via the host newspapers, political enthusiasts via POLITICO and the world via Yahoo! News,” said John Harris, POLITICO editor-in-chief, in a press release.
