“In the case of Mr Peston’s scoop on the Lloyds takeover of HBOS, there appears to be some evidence that there was heavy trading in HBOS shares minutes before he went on the air. That is a legitimate subject of investigation – not the fact that the story turned out to be accurate,” reads this op-ed on FT.com.

FT.com: Deceleration in US online advertising
Online advertising spending in the US has decelerated sharply, even before recent weeks of financial crisis – damaging hopes that the consumer internet economy would ‘remain largely resilient’ in a recession.
Online media consumption up by seven per cent, as a result of financial strife
Yesterday, Beet TV flagged up that a record number of users seeking online media information led to a seven per cent spike in traffic for Akamai, the delivery network which carries the internet flow for NBC, the BBC, Reuters and other news sites.
The current economic turmoil, hurricanes and the presidential campaign has helped boost the need for online information. At their peak, Akamai were registering 3.7 million requests per minute.
The spike follows a trend for online news sites doing well in times of financial strife: last month site traffic ‘exploded’ at the FT.com, as a result of the drop in share prices.
The need for information was felt on Wall Street, coinciding with a redesign of the Wall Street Journal Online. “Monday set an all time record of two million visitors”, a Wall Street Journal spokeswoman told Beet.TV. Traffic on Tuesday was nearly as high. “These are pretty big numbers, considering monthly unique visitors are 17 million,” she said.
The irony is that financial disaster, hurricanes and presidential elections seem to be a good thing for the world of online media.

How did the national newspaper online sites report the August ABCes?
This post has backfired a little: the original idea was to look at how the national broadsheets reported the ABCes because it’s always interesting when a publication or website has to report on itself – on its good or bad performance.
Here’s how the Guardian did it today:
That obsession [Team GB] most obviously helped the Guardian, which took advantage of the Beijing effect. That meant that guardian.co.uk remained the UK’s biggest online newspaper for August, attracting 23.11 million global unique users last month, a 46% increase from August 2007 and up 12% on July this year. The Guardian added 2.5 million unique users last month and still has the largest number of UK-based online readers: 8.77 million or 38% of its total audience.
And on the day itself like this.
And Telegraph.co.uk?
It looks like they didn’t.
Times Online?
It appears not.
Independent.co.uk?
Nope.
FT.com
No.
Please correct us if we’re wrong.
Looks like there was only one national newspaper who gave the August stats so much online space. But you could read about the ABCes at Brand Republic, Press Gazette, NMA and here at Journalism.co.uk. Or find the data for yourself here.

Prior to today’s launch of the smaller embedded player users were directed to a specific page for video content.
FT.com follows the BBC in embedding video in its news pieces and more widely across the site.It stared in March and soon after claimed the move had led to a doubling of views.
