MediaMemo: Time Inc. on paywall plans and print/iPad-only content

As reported by Nieman Journalism Lab, Reuters blogger Felix Salmon noticed late last month that a Time Magazine story he had followed a link to online wasn’t there, instead there was this message:

To read TIME Magazine in its entirety, subscribe or download the issue on the iPad.

The next morning the story reappeared in its entirety.

Yesterday reporters at Nieman noticed that “nearly every major article” on Time Magazine’s website was no longer available in full:

Check out the current issue of Time Magazine at Time.com. Click around. Notice anything? On almost every story that comes from the magazine, there’s this phrase: “The following is an abridged version of an article that appears in the July 12, 2010 print and iPad editions of TIME.”

This afternoon MediaMemo has confirmation from parent company Time Inc. that there are title-by-title paywall plans and content across its publications will increasingly be print and iPad only. Spokesman Dawn Bridges outlines the publisher’s policy:

We’ve said for awhile that increasingly we’ll move content from the print (and now iPad) versions of our titles off of the web. With People, we haven’t had hardly any content [SIC] from the magazine on the web for a long time. Our strategy is to use the web for breaking news and ‘commodity’ type of news; (news events of any type, stock prices, sports scores) and keep (most of) the features and longer analysis for the print publication and iPad versions.

Advertising Age: Magazines to sell subscriptions in Facebook news feed

Synapse, a division of Time Inc. that sells subscriptions to many publishers’ titles, is working with Alvenda, an ecommerce applications company, “to introduce a system letting Facebook users buy print magazine subscriptions without leaving the site or even the Facebook news feed”, reports Advertising Age.

There’s also plans for articles via Facebook:

If you share a magazine article link with your Facebook friends, for example, their news feeds will allow them to expand the item into a full article with ads and an option to subscribe.

NYTimes.com: Publishers to launch online magazine newsstand

From 24 November, but worth flagging up this project in the US: a consortium of magazine publishers which includes Time Inc. and Condé Nast are to build an online magazine newsstand in ‘multiple digital formats’, reports the New York Times.

“The formation of a new company to run the online newsstand – sometimes characterized as an ‘iTunes for magazines’ – may be announced in early December. Time, Condé Nast, Hearst, and Meredith all intend to be equity partners in the new company, although the deals have not yet been signed.”

Life.com website launched

Time Inc and Getty Images yesterday launched Life.com, which offers free access to more than 7 million photos that depict the news.

What was once a deceased US publication, Life has now been revived and is online.

The site features photos from as far back as the 1850 up to the present day. Around 3,000 photos are added each day.

Users can view, rate, share and link to the photos, which will be categorised into news, celebrity, sports, travel and animals.

Celebrities will also have the chance to create galleries of their favourite subjects or themes, with Ellen DeGeneres will be the first to do so.

Life.com editor, Bill Shapiro said in an article for Brand Republic, the tagline for the site is ‘See your world’, which he believes shows the sheer amount of photos that users can view that have shaped their lives.
