Newspaper Society Advertising and Digital Media Awards: the results on and offline

So Associated Northcliffe Digital/Northcliffe Media came out smiling, after digital awards aplenty at last night’s Newspaper Society’s Advertising and Digital Media Awards – the group won golds for Niche Website of the Year, Digital Innovation of the year and Digital Team of the Year. On top of that the winner for ad of the year, the Hull Daily Mail, is one of Northcliffe’s too.

Speaking in a release issued last night, the Newspaper Society (NS) communications director Lynne Anderson praised online entries: “The digital element of the awards was particularly impressive this year with clear evidence that local media publishers are becoming increasingly effective at communicating with their audiences online.”

I try my hardest to serve the online readership, especially considering it’s in my own time and entirely voluntary, so this award is fantastic recognition for all my late nights and early mornings, all the weekends sat at the computer, and all the laptop blogging while on holiday in German, Vienna and other places! I didn’t mean to detract from your moment of glory (congratulations on the gold) but thought it was worth flagging up the room for further digital improvements at regional level – perhaps more papers using your blogging style for regional news / local information, which really would mobilise the local communities online and perhaps incorporate video / online debate / links to social media. There could be so much more of what you’re doing country-wide. And awards that recognise digital content to be judged alongside print categories, not just advertising ones. The fact that you do this in your own time and voluntarily is very commendable on your part, but not how it should be – papers need to start investing in blogs if they want them to work. By the way, I don’t suppose you have a link to the Scotsman blog do you?
