10,000 Words: Newsrooms can learn from tech start-up culture

Newspapers looking to reinvent their newsroom culture could learn a few things from small, nimble tech start-ups, according to a post on tech-meets-journalism blog 10,000 Words.

Suggestions include replacing your website’s dull list of contacts with individual journalist photos and biographies and getting journalists to do more behind-the-scenes blogging about their daily work.

“In an era when we’re pushing for news transparency more than ever, creating a team page and individual biography pages should be easy to accomplish,” the site says.

“For a newspaper or other news site, the page could contain background information, areas of interest, disclosures, and ways to contact that author if you have a tip.

“There’s so much we can learn from trials and tribulations in our newsrooms that we can share with other newspaper staffs or our readers.”

NYTimes: Apple dominate technology news, suggests Pew study

The Times’ Media Decoder Blog: Analysis from the US-based Pew Research Center suggests Apple and its products dominate US technology news reports with 15.1 per cent of tech articles surveyed by the centre over the past year focusing primarily on the company.

It’s not as if Microsoft lacks for public relations people. But Apple is especially effective at seizing journalists’ attention, said Amy S. What does a technology correspondent do before he becomes a journalist?

Found an online network for the Jewish community? Launch a search engine for adult porn? Or both as Channel 4 News’ Benjamin Cohen did, starting out at the tender age of 16.

At 4pm (GMT) today on Radio 4, Cohen will discuss his dotcom past – including his stint as an unlikely porn baron and his sale of SoJewish to a newspaper, which he says wasted £1 million – in I Was a Teenage Dotcom Millionaire.

“In the programme he tracks down the investors who lost everything in his ventures and former employees to work out why things went so wrong,” says the blurb and there’s plenty more on Cohen’s whizzkid past – he was at one point higher than Prince William on the Sunday Times’ Rich List and also founded PinkNews.co.ukin this Sunday Times’ interview.
