Webby success for FT.com and BBC News

The Financial Times and the BBC have reason to celebrate after they both won Webby Awards – considered by many as the Oscars of online publishing.

With nominations in over 70 categories FT.com’s Alphaville blog and the BBC News site were amongst a crowded field of winners as they picked up gongs earlier this week.

The Webbys are selected by a group made up of web, business and celebrity figures selected by the awarding body, the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, with the people’s voice awards voted on by web-using members of the public.

Alphaville won the best business blog category, also picking up the people’s voice award in that category.

BBC News was the people’s voice winner in the news category (it also won the main award in the radio category) with the main prize going to NYTimes.com – one of a total of six awards for the publication.

Two of those successes came in the online newspaper section where NYTimes.com won both the main award and the people’s voice award, in the process beating of competition from Guardian.co.uk, Independent.co.uk, the Wall Street Journal Online and Variety.com.

WSJ’s managing editor Marcus Brauchli steps down

Marcus Brauchli, managing editor of the Wall Street Journal, is quitting, a press release from the company has confirmed.

Brauchli, who took on the position last May, will become a consultant to News Corporation.

“Following the change in ownership of Dow Jones and the Journal, I have concluded the time is right to consider new career possibilities,” Brauchli said in the release.
“I revere the Journal and hold my colleagues here, both old and new, in the highest regard. There isn’t a better team in journalism, and I will greatly miss working with them on a daily basis.”

Portfolio: WSJ quietly making big traffic strides

Even with a firewall blocking access to large parts of the site for non-subscribers, traffic is still growing at a most impressive for the WSJ – according to its own claims.

According to internal numbers, WSJ.com hosted 15 million unique visitors in March, reports Portfolio, a 175 percent increase over March 2007, Alan Murray, executive editor of the Wall Street Journal Online told it.

Page views came in at around 165 million, up 75 percent year-over-year.

Wall Street Journal launches environmental business blog

WSJ.com has created a new blog focusing on the impact of environmental change on the energy industry.

The Environmental Capital blog, which can be accessed for free, will feature regular podcasts and contributions from industry experts, guest bloggers and columnists.

Keith Johnson, reporter for The Wall Street Journal, will be the blog’s lead writer, while the Journal’s environmental news editor Jeffrey Ball is editor and contributor.

NBC provides code to embed news shows

From Wednesday news show clips from US broadcaster NBC will be offered as embeddable codes, according to a report from beet.tv.

As the beet.tv article points out, while such codes are offered for Reuters videos and videos on the Wall Street Journal website, this is the first time a major US network news operation has opted for this method of sharing content.
