allmediascotland: Herald Group agrees to voluntary redundancies

Following the National Union of Journalists’ (NUJ) submission of a list of applications for voluntary redundancy at the Scotland-based Newsquest Herald Group, all but one of the names were accepted, Allmediascotland.com reports.

Further names have now been added (which takes the total to just above 40) – and will be confirmed after a meeting between the newspaper and the NUJ on Thursday, according to Allmediascotland.

The successful applications include Ian Bruce, the defence correspondent at the Herald, and Alan Campbell, sports writer at the Sunday Herald. Full story...

NUJ Release – New Statesman doesn’t recognise union

The National Union of Journalists reports that the New Statesman is refusing to enter negotiations with the union:

“The union wrote to the company in May last year asking for a voluntary recognition agreement to cover pay and working conditions.

“But journalists on the magazine – who are almost all NUJ members – have been told by their boss that the company won’t play ball.”

AP: Seattle Post-Intelligencer faces closure if buyer cannot be found

Seattle’s oldest newspaper, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, was put up for sale on Friday by owners Hearst Corp and – if a buyer is not forthcoming in the next 60 days – the paper will close or continue only online. Full story…

Canadian Association of Journalists: Job cuts impact quality journalism

A news release that claims job cuts by Canadian media owners could lead to ‘our news becoming nothing more than rewritten press releases’.

“The decisions taken this fall will lead to more centralization of news in Canada, fewer opportunities for Canadians to learn from different voices and will threaten the very existence of quality local and investigative reporting,” says Canadian Association of Journalists president Mary Agnes Welch.

The CAJ fears “journalism in Canada is reaching a tipping point where the decline in the quality of news content will lead to an industry death spiral of less content, smaller audiences, and yet more cuts”.

WFSJ: Science groups campaign against CNN cuts (via CJR)

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, the National Association of Science Writers, the Society of Environmental Journalists and the World Federation of Science Journalists have sent a joint letter to the networks presidents to protest against CNN’s decision to cut its entire science team.
