E&P: Will the Pulitzer Prizes finally recognise digital journalism this year?

Editor & Publisher’s Mark Fitzgerald talks to veteran Wall Street Journal and Economist Group journalist Roy J. Harris Jr. about the Pulitzer Prizes, and the chances of online-only journalism being in among the winners this year.

More than a decade ago, in 1999, the Pulitzers opened entries to online content, and in the past two years has eased eligibility requirements for entries by online-only news organizations. Yet, no entry that appeared only on the Web has ever won a Pulitzer.

“It’s one thing to have press release from the Pulitzer organization that we welcome online entries,” Harris said. “But when you go a couple of years without anyone winning it – that sends a signal too.”

E&P: Haitian press ‘every bit as devastated as island itself’

In a special report to its biannual meeting, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has described the state of the Haitian media two months on from the country’s devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake. What remains of the industry has been severely damaged in its ability to bring in revenue, pay staff, and establish communication lines.

The earthquake damaged or destroyed many media office buildings as well as broadcasting equipment, printing presses and computers. And by shutting down so many businesses that bought advertisements, the quake undermined the financial foundations of the industry. Some airlines and wireless companies continue to advertise, and some aid organizations have bought public service announcements. But many other businesses that used to buy airtime or print space will take months or years to rebuild, and that could translate into a prolonged nosedive in ad revenue for the industry.

Poynter: Nielsen to sell Mediaweek in US; closing Editor&Publisher

A long-term source of editor’s picks for this blog, US trade publication Editor&Publisher is being axed by parent company Nielsen Business Media.

The sale of the title, which provided industry news on the newspaper and newsmedia industry, will be accompanied by the sale of eight brands from the group’s media and entertainment division, including Adweek, Brandweek and Mediaweek.
