Video is just start of online for Sport, says MD

A new video player – courtesy of Perform and Virgin Media – is just the start for Sport magazine’s ‘nascent’ website, Greg Miall, managing director, told Journalism.co.uk.

Traditionally television’s domain, online sports video from other media sites is a growing trend. By working with a third party, however, rights to the content are handled by Virgin, which supplies Premier League football highlights, and Perform, which handles video of cricket, tennis, golf and rugby fixtures.

“It’s a different way to supply a latent audience demand for this kind of content,” said Miall, adding that the BBC’s recent online coverage of the Beijing Olympics was a benchmark for online sports video.

“What it did [the BBC’s Olympics site] was provide another way of viewing all this content and a lot more people ended up looking at content, which they might not look at usually.”

Improvements are lined up for the player and embedding it across the site’s other channels is also in the pipeline.

In addition, an online channel manager is set to join the magazine in the next few weeks and will bring in a series of changes to the site, Miall added.

The key thinking behind the video offering, he said, is to appeal to a generation of readers and viewers who aren’t watching television for prolonged periods or through a set anymore.

So is short-form, online sports video the freesheet equivalent of television?

Hold the front page – women guest edit magazine

Journalism.co.uk wonders if we’ve accidentally gone back in time, or missed the point here. A press release from Wallpaper* announces that three females creatives (yes! Women! Not men!) are to take the helm at the magazine for its October issue. And it’s their biggest issue of the year! The three talented ladies have each produced 20 editorial pages, ‘as well as designing their own cover’. The press release is entitled ‘GIRL POWER: THREE FEMALE CREATIVE LEGENDS GUEST EDIT WALLPAPER*’. Say no more.

10 magazine – free in your Guardian today, but £8.86 online

A funny little magazine fell out of the Guardian onto Journalism.co.uk’s lap this morning: a ‘special mini-edition’ of 10 magazine. So un-Guardian like that Journalism.co.uk had to pop into WH Smith to check another copy, to clarify that it hadn’t in fact dropped out of the sky.

No, it was in the Guardian. One end of the mini-magazine is men’s content, turn it the other way and the other end is women’s, with a feature on ‘Ten looks from the old and wiser’ that tells us ‘all of these handsome folk are 100 years old or more. There are some nice great-grandmas and lovely great-grandpas. With age comes wisdom…’

Is this a new promotion from the Guardian or has it been done before?

Apparently, there have been 15 issues of the men’s and 28 issues of the women’s mag that have been purchased by consumers at £4.95 a pop. We’d like to hear from people who have read it in full.

The magazine’s website is minimalist, but you can subscribe over at the magazine cafe.

Journalism.co.uk is putting an early birthday request in for a single copy: online, the women’s magazine is priced £10.96, and the men’s is £8.86. Type ‘Ten’ in the search box, under the category men’s and women’s interest to find it.

Hello magazine calls for reader bloggers

Four months after the launch of Hello Magazine’s first blog, Hellomagazine.com has called for readers to volunteer themselves as ‘official hellomagazine.com online bloggers’.

In an interview with Onlinejournalismblog.com, Hello’s Online Marketing Manager, David Whitcomb, said: “I think the launch of our own blog and the move into community-based blogs is a way of making our readers get a bit more involved in the hellomagazine.com brand rather than any initial commercial considerations. These are always on the table, and we are looking into ways of commercialising potential blogs.”

France magazine editor writes for Times Online

The editor of Archant-owned France Magazine, Carolyn Boyd, has been commissioned to write a monthly article for the Times Online travel section.

Hoping to attract interest in her own magazine, the article links to the magazine’s website and its subscriptions page.

“I’d written for them before I joined France Magazine, so it’s a great way of carrying on the relationship and promoting the magazine at the same time,” she said.
