‘I knew they’d never get the lid back on’: Tom Watson talks to the Guardian about phone hacking

Labour MP Tom Watson has spoken to the Guardian’s John Harris about his part in bringing the phone-hacking scandal to light, and the mountains of paperwork and lack of sleep that followed the news that Milly Dowler’s phone had been hacked.

Despite the sleep deprivation, Watson said, there has was “a great sense of relief” as revelations tumbled out over the past month.

At some points over the last two years, I thought it might blow. But I’ve also thought that the lid could be welded back on. But when Nick Davies broke the Milly Dowler story, that was the point where I knew they’d never get the lid back on.

First web editors appointed to American Society of News Editors’ board

The American Society of News Editors (ASNE) has appointed not one, but two web editors to its board – the first time web editors have been represented on the group’s executive in its almost 100-year history (picked up via Editor & Publisher).

John Harris, editor-in-chief of Politico, and Anthony Moor, deputy managing editor/interactive of Dallas Morning News, will take up the positions.

The appointments were made ‘to reach out to news executives beyond the group’s print newspaper roots‘, an ASNE announcement said.

The addition of web editors to the association’s board is one of many recent changes by the ASNE towards a more digital outlook. In April this year the body changed ‘Newspaper’ for ‘News’ in its name.

Beet.tv: Politico to make profit this year, says founder

Politico, the ad-supported political news site founded in 2006, will become profitable this year, according to co-founder John Harris.

Yahoo and Politico to offer inside view of Democrat and Republican conventions

Yahoo and POLITICO are to live stream a series of breakfast debates from the US Democratic and Republican National Conventions, which will be held in Denver in August and in St Paul in September respectively.

The panels will be moderated by Politico editors and will be open to convention attendees and the general public.

Local papers The Denver Post and St Paul Pioneer Press will also cover the events.

“It is hard to imagine more exciting partnerships at a more important time in this historic campaign. These events will offer politicians and the public access to unique and powerful audiences: the local community via the host newspapers, political enthusiasts via POLITICO and the world via Yahoo! News,” said John Harris, POLITICO editor-in-chief, in a press release.
