Mashable: Reuters frees content with new API

Reuters Thompson is opening up the way people can use its content across the web by making available a limited range of non-commercial API opportunities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API) through the Reuters Lab.
Reuters could be looking to extend its distribution through this experiment as it will allow developers the change to build new editorial web-based applications using content from Reuters.
However, developers have to make requests to the lab for permission to develop new applications claims Mashable.

In an attempt to break down the divide between technology and editorial sections of the newsroom, the Telegraph as introduced a newsroom lab for all members of staff to develop new online products, and ‘take some of the culture [of the lab] back out onto the floor’.

News.com: Is Twitter so addictive that we can’t live without it?

The major disruption to Twitter last week was made all the more embarrassing by its huge popularity, says Charles Cooper, but are its recurring technical problems scaling the service a blip that Twitterholics will put up with?
Cooper doesn’t think so, a word of warning from him:
“Is Twitter so addictive that we can’t live without it? Don’t believe the hype.
“I know a lot of tweet-deprived people who made it through the weekend in fine fettle.
“Remember what happened to Friendster? The service started to bog down and failed to recover in time.
“The upshot: It lost its mojo and its users defected to the likes of MySpace and Facebook.”
Cooper adds that if the gremlins are dispatched from the Twitter machine then the service could have a bright future - but warns that the next fad is just round the corner if problems persist.

UK broadcaster Five has selected digital media technology firm Signiant to help it switch from a tape-based to file-based broadcasting system.

BBC: Google and Yahoo to share ad space online

Google and Yahoo have announced a two week experiment that will see the web giants take a share of each other’s advertising space.
During the trial Google will be able to put ads next to 3 per cent of search results on Yahoo.
Microsoft, which recently offered to buy Yahoo, has criticised the scheme.
“Any definitive agreement between Yahoo and Google would consolidate over 90 per cent of the search advertising market in Google’s hands. This would make the market far less competitive,” Brad Smith, Microsoft’s General Counsel, told the BBC
