Did you lose your newspaper job? Help us with our survey

November 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by Judith Townend in Job losses

A call to all journalists who have left newspaper jobs: Journalism.co.uk’s survey in collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) continues. We’ve had a good response so far, but we still need more data to make for a more informed study. Since we launched the project, even more UK redundancies have been announced; this week, for example, 17 were cut by Trinity Mirror (this time in Merseyside). Please help us by re-tweeting, blogging and forwarding the survey links to people you think may have been affected by the newspaper jobs cull sweeping Britain.

We want to know about your experiences of losing your job and how you have adapted in your personal and professional life since leaving the newspaper. We’re also considering the gap in knowledge and experience you have left behind.

The survey, which draws on work by colleagues in the US and the University of Kansas, is voluntary and confidential. Results cannot be attributed to a specific individual unless the individual chooses to reveal himself or herself. You also can refuse to answer any question. The survey will take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Jon Hickman: Why has the Guardian received little backlash over jobs board hack?

November 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by Judith Townend in Editors' pick, Jobs, Online Journalism

Cast your minds back a few weeks: the Guardian UK jobs board, operated by Madgex, was targeted by hackers. The Guardian reported the incident in its print edition, and the comments beneath an initial blog post show some strong criticism and speculation over why the attack occurred.

But Birmingham City University researcher Jon Hickman reflects that it passed with ‘little comment’:

“Guardian Jobs must have many thousands of members, and this security breach could be affecting them all in a very real way, yet I haven’t seen much in the way of a backlash.

“Twitter should be out in force decrying this failure in the website’s duty of care. Questions should be asked of the Guardian’s response which puts the onus on individual consumers. Instead: nothing.

“How, in these times of consumer activism and online protest has this passed uncommented? Given the pressures of the marketplace, why do The Guardian not have to work hard to keep in favour with their audience?

“Perhaps even in this digital age the old myths of the mainstream news media still hold true today: we work for them, all the while thinking we are the customer when in fact we’re the product.”

The Star: ‘Locked-out’ Canadian journalists lead scandal coverage

October 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by Laura Oliver in Editors' pick, Jobs, Online Journalism

What do you do when you’re locked out from your own paper? Set up a website of course and investigate the allegations and goings-on behind the stand-off.

Such is the story of Canadian website Ruefrontenac.com, the work of 253 employees  from Quebec newspaper Journal de Montreal who have been ‘locked out’ by their employer Quebecor following dispute over jobs and working hours between the publisher and the union.

“Ruefrontenac.com has set up in an old dance studio overlooking the Journal’s parking lot.

“The journalists choose their own topics to write about without having to consider corporate interests, Bousquet [Richard Bousquet, the website's co-ordinator] said. ‘It’s a bit of a journalistic experiment.’

“Journalists divide their time producing content and picketing.”

Videojournalist David Dunkley Gyimah named Southbank artist in residence

October 28th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by Laura Oliver in Jobs, Multimedia

Videojournalist and Westminster University lecturer David Dunkley Gyimah has been made an artist in residence at London’s Southbank Centre.

During his 2009-10 residency, Dunkley Gyimah will work on a new form of artistic film, mixing documentary style with a new response to the film format – he’s already begun working on projects for his residency on his site viewmagazine.tv.

“As a deep reservoir of knowledge, arts and cultures it would be my wish to find new discourses for creating arts reportage, but also to work alongside other artists and, through the style of solo videojournalism I have practised for the last 16 years, continue to develop styles and manners in which we can exploit new and digital media forms to both tell stories and create our own visual and literary footprints,” said Dunkley Gyimah in a statement.

Twice recognised in the Online News Association’s (ONA) annual awards, Spanish news site Soitu.es has announced its closure.

Building an audience was not the issue – attracting advertisers to a new model was the problem, Gumersindo Lafuente, founder of the site, has said (in a post attracting 760 comments so far).

At 22-months-old, Soitu’s closure will be a blow/lesson to news start-ups and independent sites recently launched.

London Lite could close following consultation

October 27th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by Judith Townend in Job losses, Jobs, Newspapers

Associated Newspapers today announced that it is entering a period of consultation over the future of the London Lite, which could see the free evening publication close. Thirty-six London Lite employees will be consulted before a final decision is made, a statement said.

“The latest development in the London afternoon free newspaper space dictates that we look again at the future of London Lite. Despite reaching a large audience with an excellent editorial format, we are concerned about the commercial viability in this highly competitive area,” said Steve Auckland, managing director, Associated Newspapers Free Division.

In August, News International, the UK newspaper division of News Corporation announced that it would close thelondonpaper, its free evening newspaper launched in 2006.

Guardian jobs site targeted by hackers

An attack by hackers may have ‘compromised’ the details of up to 500,000 Guardian jobs site users, the Guardian has reported.

The Guardian jobs site, which advertises many journalism and media related jobs, was targeted on Friday, but the hack was stopped before it was completed. The police is now investigating.

A statement on the Guardian’s site says:

“We are continuing to work closely with our service provider and the police, who are undertaking a full investigation through the central e-crime unit at New Scotland Yard. Please continue to visit this site for regular updates.”

User data is stored on separate databases managed for the Guardian by third party companies. In the UK, it is operated by Madgex. Its US site was unaffected by the hack the company said.

An extract from the Guardian’s report:

“The Guardian has emailed ‘up to half a million’ users of its UK-based Jobs website to tell them that some of their personal data may have been compromised by ‘a sophisticated and deliberate hack’ on Friday night.

“A Guardian spokesperson said the site has about 10 million unique users per year, and that ‘the hack was stopped before it was completed’.

“‘As soon as we were alerted to the fact that there was a problem, we dealt with it, in line with the information commissioner’s guidance on data protection,’ said the spokesperson. ‘We felt it was important to be transparent and alert our users as soon as possible.’”

Update:

The company that operates Guardian Jobs, Madgex, believes it was the only of its clients to be targeted in this way, according to a statement by its CEO Simon Conroy.

Statement in full:

“We can confirm that hackers accessed the personal details from some job seeker CVs on our client’s recruitment website, Guardian Jobs, on Friday October 23.

“We are not aware of any other Madgex-operated website having been targeted in this way, but we have taken preventative measures to ensure the same issue cannot occur with other client Job Boards.

“Madgex has an excellent security record and we are continually reviewing our systems and comply with industry standard practices.

“Unfortunately, no site can ever be warranted as 100 per cent safe from concerted and technologically sophisticated criminal hackers.

“This situation has been treated with the utmost seriousness and Guardian Jobs has contacted all those affected by this security breach, advising them of precautionary measures they can take. Madgex and Guardian Jobs are supporting the relevant authorities with their investigations.”
