Guardian wins top sports award with multimedia coverage

Video search engine Blinkx partners Guardian

Guardian.co.uk has agreed a deal with blinkx to make its video content available through the search engine’s website.
News, current affairs, travel and entertainment video content from the paper’s website will be searchable on blinkx.com.

Press Gazette: Guardian job cuts will not target older staff

Experienced print journalists will not be overlooked in favour of more web-savvy staff, the paper’s managing editor has said.

Chris Elliot said he expected 30 to 40 editorial staff would leave as part of an ongoing voluntary redundancy scheme.

But he said there would be no drop in the total number of editorial staff, as the paper is seeking to recruit more journalists with online skills before its move to new integrated headquarters at Kings Cross at the end of the year.

The Register: Guardian pulls out of behavioural ad targeting deal

The Guardian has pulled out of a deal, which would have served online ads to readers based on information on their behaviour on other websites.

Concerns had been raised over the ethical implications of the deal with Phorm, echoed by Simon Kilby, advertising manager at the Guardian, in an email response to a reader:

“It is true that we have had conversations with them [Phorm] regarding their services but we have concluded at this time that we do not want to be part of the network. Our decision was in no small part down to the conversations we had internally about how this product sits with the values of our company.

“I hope you appreciate that the quality of the Guardian’s editorial is funded by our advertising sales operation and it is our duty to keep abreast of all developments in this sector. In this instance, however, I agree with you that this is not something that we should be partnering.”

Media Guardian: Guardian to launch network for digital developers

Guardian News and Media has recruited Matt McAlister, currently director of Yahoo!’s developer network in San Francisco, to head up a new project working with external developers.

The Guardian developer network, which will launch at the end of April, will make some Guardian tools and data available to outside developers.

McAlister, who has also worked for online media title InfoWorld and at the Industry Standard, will help determine which Guardian services will be made available through the network
