good canter around the issues

couple of extra points

skills and confidence to write and publish - are at the heart of it - just help people who are active in their community to publish to the web. otherwise there isn't much content for people to aggregate. this is what www.talkaboutlocal.org is about

don't try to monetise it up front - the business model is even weaker than that for local papers. build sites as a public service and then see about monetising them later.

local media brands have a huge role to play in 'convening' local content, but they need to respect people who publish well locally and free up their own (preferably geo-coded) content for others to reuse for free.

there is already a site that rounds up hyperlocal groups, mail lists etc - www.groupsnearyou.com

good to see this debate happening

cheers

Don't forget www.aboutmyarea.co.uk/nn12 yes we are a franchise, but we do have CMS that allows us to put advertising right up there with our content. I have been running my site for over two years.

The knack is content first, then visitors then sell advertising. I run the site part time but I am able to compete with the two local newspapers on news.

It's a cracking little business - if anyone wants to know more email me at jamesrudd@aboutmyarea.co.uk
