You are correct. Mobile has really empowered citizen journalism in a big way particularly in Orissa where I live.

Odisha.com which uses smsgupshup platform breaks almost every news related to Orissa from across the world and news from remote corner of the state that no body covers.

It appears it has now 50,000 subscribers. That shows its popularity.

Some time it sends alert within a second after some thing happens in a remote area. The portal says people sends sms news and inform about the happening around them.

The portal say it empowers people and only cross check the information through its own chain of network that it has all over.

It is real citizen journalism. I was traveling in Kalahandi and came across an accident in which two persons died. Just five minutes after I received Odisha.com breaking news alert about the same incident. It was simply great.

The alert informs officials, people even before they know about happenings. After getting the alert they rush to the spot.

There are many examples in Orissa how Odisha.com breaking news alert helped avoid riots, stop crime, nab culprits and prevention of spread of diseases such as bird flu and diarehhoea

We are thankful Odisha.com for this unique initiative that we believe deserves appreciation and honour.

great to see citizen journalism growing in India. I run a company called iConflict.com that allows citizen journalists to upload news, video and images to our homepage - which is dedicated to covering international conflicts and crises. The site is going to launch in 2 weeks. Let me know if you have any questions on it. you can view our blog now at blog.iconflict.com.

While it is good to learn that Mobile is big in India, other platforms cannot be ruled out.
