Flip video cameras to be discontinued

Multimedia journalists’ favourite the Flip video camera is to be discontinued.

In a release sent out today, Cisco, which bought out the mini video camera with built-in USB two years ago, said it is to shut down its Flip business.

Cisco said it will “support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan”.

Launched in May 2007, the Flip had sold a million digital camcorders in the US by the following year and was becoming increasingly popular in the UK.

In a release in 2008, Cisco reported the Flip captured 14 per cent of the total video camera market and was worth more than £340 million.

paidContent: Government ends plans for free online content at main libraries

The Department of Culture Media and Sport has advised Journalism.co.uk of some inaccuracies in this article by PaidContent. We are awaiting clarification and will update this post shortly.

paidContent reports this week the government has abandoned plans “that would have compelled publishers of content behind ‘paywalls’ to make that content available for free through Britain’s main libraries”.

The report refers to the government’s response to a consultation on plans to allow libraries to use both free and paid-for content in their archives, which appears to have been published this month.

Currently, the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003 grants the British Library, the National Libraries of Scotland and Wales, and the university libraries of Oxford, Cambridge and Trinity College, Dublin, the right to receive and store one printed copy of each printed work available in the UK.

Last September, the government, acting on advice from the Legal Deposit Advisory Panel, which advises government on the Act, proposed extending this provision to offline digital publications and online publications. The libraries would run harvesting algorithms to grab and store the content. But paid-access web systems make this more difficult.

… But, in conclusion this week, it [the government] says: “In the light of the overall responses, and the lack of evidence from both libraries and publishers to support the case that the regulations do not impose a disproportionate burden, we do not believe that it is viable to go forward with the regulations as currently drafted unless we can find evidence of proportionality.”

paidContent said this is “a victory” for news publishers.

Mashable: What impact has the NY Times paywall had on traffic?

Mashable has been attempting to discover the impact of the New York Times metered-paywall on web traffic.

It is early days as the wall only went up on 28 March but the analysis suggests a reduction of between five and 10 per cent in traffic and a fall in pageviews by up to 30 per cent.

It is perhaps not surprising that pageviews have taken a greater hit as the metered-paywall model allows readers to access up to 20 articles a month free, so users may be deterred from clicking as many pages .

So here’s the big question: Is NYT’s paywall a success or a failure? When it comes to this big-picture question, we still don’t have enough information to make a conclusion. The paywall simply hasn’t been around long enough and we don’t have the financial data to see whether the paywall has made up for the loss in advertising revenue.

Preston hyperlocal site bids for funding for 2012 community project

Preston hyperlocal news and community site Blog Preston is competing for £5,000 in funding to help it cover 2012′s Preston Guild, a historic city celebration held once every 20 years.

The funding is on offer from the Co-operative’s Start a Revolution competition, which aims to help community groups and charities with projects that will benefit the community, inspire young people, or combat climate change or global poverty.

The competition is split into different regions, with Blog Preston up against a wide variety of bids in the Northern England group. Competition ranges from other media initiatives, including the 7 Waves Community Radio project, which offers training in radio production, script writing, interviewing, sound production and other skills, to projects based on angling, boxing, the arts, and more.

According to Blog Preston founder Ed Walker, the site intends to use the money to “capture the Guild stories, research the history, film events and speak to people who saw the last Guild (or four) and make sure those memories are not lost”.

Our site has a track record of great community coverage, from meetings about saving swimming polls to covering when the EDL came to town to up-to-the-minute updates on the general election. We know how to cover events, and we want to make sure the Preston Guild is covered to the full extent. And who knows, it might inspire those involved in covering it to find out more about their city and the Guild itself.

The competition is open to a public vote until the 29 May. You see more about the Blog Preston bid at this link, or visit the Co-operative competition site for more information and the opportunity to vote.

Guardian: ITN chief executive’s pay package nearly £700K

April 12th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted by in Broadcasting, Editors' pick

ITN chief executive John Hardie earned £682,000 in 2010, the Guardian reports.

The boss of the commercial broadcaster received less than the director general of the BBC, Mark Thompson for the year, however.

According to this article in the Telegraph published in July last year, Thompson received £838,000, including a £163,000 pension top-up.

The ITN chief executive, John Hardie, saw his total remuneration package rise last year to £682,000 as the broadcaster recorded a pre-tax profit of £400,000.

Hardie received a base salary of £350,000 in 2010, as well as a further £300,000 in bonus and benefits payments, according to the ITV News and Channel 4 News broadcaster’s full-year accounts published last week.

The former Disney executive took home a total remuneration package of £238,000 in 2009, after joining the company in June that year.

The Guardian’s full article is at this link.

Comment: Is the director general of the BBC overpaid in relation to the ITN boss? Or is the ITN boss, who is operating in a harsh commercial climate, underpaid?
