Bangkok Post publishes Thailand’s first 3D newspaper

A Thai newspaper has become the first in the country to produce a 3D photo edition of its newspaper, according to the Shaping the Future of the Newspaper blog.

The Bangkok Post, an English-language daily, published the special edition to celebrate its 64th anniversary.

The three-dimensional effect was also applied to the advertisements and to a special section called Our Pride, published in celebration of the newspaper recently winning the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers’ (WAN-IFRA) Best Overall Design award in Asia-Pacific and Middle East.

Long-form proves popular on new university hyperlocal site

Pilot hyperlocal news and features site Standfirst Online, run by media students at Bournemouth University, has reported a successful first few weeks – with long-form journalism proving to be a popular product on the platform.

Co-supervisor Chindu Sreedharan oversees the site, which is aimed at the university community. He told Journalism.co.uk that the platform had allowed the students to tackle online content in different ways.

Over the three editions, they managed to go beyond the inverted pyramid, and explore other forms of reportage, other forms of writing – literary journalism, for instance. Again, when you look at it, that’s quite unique – having long-form journalism in a hyperlocal venture. For our launch, we had a strong cover story in an in-depth interview with the outgoing VC Paul Curran. In Edition 2, the students put together a very strong profile of Professor John Vinney, the new VC. And for our Edition 3, we had this wonderful piece of experiential journalism from Geo Willis.

The site, which was launched as a pilot a month ago today, has received more than 6,000 page views despite its summer holiday launch period.

Zinio and Rolling Stone launch first iTunes-integrated iPad app

Zinio, a leading digital publishing company, has teamed up with Rolling Stone magazine to offer iPad an iTunes-integrated feature.

For Rolling Stone’s ’500 Greatest Songs Of All Time’ issue, users of the Zinio Magazine Newsstand & Reader App on their iPads will be able to listen to samples and buy the tracks on iTunes through the application as they read about them in the magazine.

Rolling Stone executive editor Jason Fine said: These are all the songs you need to have on your iPad. With Zinio, you can listen to the songs while you read, giving our audience an exciting way to experience the list.”

The interactive edition will be available on other platforms, and can be sampled on your PC here.

Yesterday Journalism.co.uk published our final list of 49 people that we consider to be innovators in their area of journalism or digital media. As with all lists, it’s incredibly subjective and open to debate – which is exactly what we wanted people to do.

We’ve had lots of suggestions for who else should be included. We’re listing them all below – remember, these are NOT Journalism.co.uk’s selections, they are from our readers.

Mike Butcher - long-time journalist and blogger, taking industry titles online long before anyone else was publishing websites. Joined TechCrunch in 2007 and is now editor of TechCrunch, Europe.

Emily Bell - former digital director at Guardian News and Media, Emily Bell will now lead the Tow Centre for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School. Nominated by @balihar.

Ilicco Elia – head of consumer mobile at Thomson Reuters, nominated by Sarah Booker. Pushing innovation in social media and mobile media for news organisations.

Niall Hunt - Digital content strategy manager for CMP Medica with a history of innovation, including time at EMAP investigating new approaches to web journalism. Nominated by colleague Chris Chapman, who said: “leading a web revolution here, with amazing track record in online journalism”.

Guy Clapperton - freelance journalist, broadcaster and author (has also worked as a trainer for Journalism.co.uk in the past) – an expert in online branding and marketing for freelancers.

OWNI.fr – collaboration of journalists, developers and designers creating new forms of online storytelling and news applications – and making a profit from its work. Team features Nicolas Voisin, founder and CEO, Adriano Farano and Nicolas Kayser-Bril.

Tomas Bella - Nominated by Nicolas Kayser-Bril: “He’s the only person I know of to have bought and integrated a digg-like for a news website (sme.sk) and he now offers solutions to the local online media, such as a Kachingle-like paywall plan.”

Dejan Restak - Nominated by Nicolas Kayser-Bril: “He developed a last.fm-like for the news portal B92.net and now works with mobile news at WAN/IFRA.”

Chris Wheal – freelance journalist who is successfully making a living from online journalism working for a range of finance and insurance news titles. Leading online training and development for young journalists as part of the National Union of Journalists’ training arm.

Robert Andrews – editor of paidContent:UK, nominated by Patrick Smith: “He’s been doing analysis-driven live journalism with data/charts for years.”

Advertising Age: San Francisco Chronicle on using Demand Media content

Advertising Age interviews Michele Slack, vice president of digital media for SFGate.com, the website for the San Francisco Chronicle, which recently introduced content from Demand Media to its website. The interview looks at editorial outsourcing and issues of quality control:

Ad Age: Does bringing in outside content, supplied by freelancers, undermine the need for your own full-time reporters, or does it support the business that pays for the newsroom?

Ms. Slack: I prefer to think it’s the latter. This provides us with additional revenue opportunities that we can use to support our core newsroom. Our core newsroom is our competitive advantage, so we really depend on the content they provide us with. These partnerships are about bringing in additional users and incremental revenue. All of that is to support our core business and the newsroom is an integral part of that.

WikiLeaks revelations show a mainstream media “too cosy with power”

Black Star News, an investigative newspaper in New York, has published a post by reporter Colin Benjamin who claims the leak of classified documents by WikiLeaks shows the mainstream media were “too cosy with power”.

According to Benjamin, the leaked documents paint a “starkly different picture” than that portrayed by US authorities. The material also puts the spotlight on media failures to hold those in power to account, he adds.

It contradicts the rosy assessments of officials that the war was being won with limited civilian casualties and illustrates the Taliban insurgency is much more resilient, with the fighters better equipped, than reported (…) Truth is the leaking of these classified files is also an indictment of American media’s failure.

Iraqi journalists on the difficulty of dispassionate reporting

Writing on the Dart Center for Journalism site, Tanya Paperny discusses the experiences of Iraqi journalists who visited the US last month to share their thoughts on reporting in areas of conflict.

The discussion brought up the common moral dilemma for journalists – how should you act when a person’s life is in danger in front of you? The journalists said the impact of this decision can have serious consequences for their own safety.

Another participant, who explained that he frequently has to cover bombings and suicide, talked about the kinds of scenarios in which a bystander would attack a journalist. It’s a dilemma many journalists face when they are the first to arrive at the scene of a traumatic incident: Should one take pictures and take notes for a story or help the victims? Should one wait for a health worker to do the first aid? Some participants argued that by putting down their cameras and notebooks, even if to help an injured individual, they are failing to fulfill their role as dispassionate witnesses. But there is no easy answer; each situation is different. And if the reporter chooses to take pictures and conduct interviews, that is the kind of situation that the Iraqi journalists explained could lead to harrassment by onlookers.
