paidContent: Decline in consumer magazine circulations slows

August 9th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted by in Journalism, Magazines

Drops in consumer magazine circulations appear to be improving according to a report by PaidContent on the Audit Bureau of Circulations’ Fas-Fax report today.

The downward trajectory of consumer magazine circulation appears to have slowed in the first half of the year. While publishers weren’t able to muster the slightly positive growth that ad pages have had lately—the Publishers Information Bureau recorded its first increase in ad pages and rates after two negative years last month—but as mags rely more on paid circ to pay the bills, these numbers are becoming more crucial. So far, paid circ is becoming more stable, but newsstand sales are struggling much harder.

According to the report, total paid and verified circulations for the first six months of this year still saw a decrease of 2.27 per cent on the same period last year.

New Scientist peeks into people’s buying brains with ‘neuromarketing’

August 9th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted by in Advertising, Business, Magazines

Certainly among the more forward thinking magazines in terms of content, New Scientist has this week boldly gone where no magazine (they “suspect”) has gone before: neuromarketing.

Neuromarketing is a from of marketing that uses brain-imaging technology to “peek into people’s heads and discover what they really want”.

You may find that sinister. What right does anyone have to try to read your mind? Or perhaps you are sceptical and consider the idea laughable. But neuromarketing, once dismissed as a fad, is becoming part and parcel of modern consumer society. So we decided to take a good look at it – and try it out ourselves.

A group of New Scientist readers – 19 men, to be precise – were connected to an electroencephalograph (EEG) machine shown various cover designs for the latest edition, after which NeuroFocus Europe, the company undertaking the tests, looked for “specific EEG patterns which the company believes betray whether or not a person will buy a product”.

The winning design is now on the newsstands. As for how it will sell, that is another test entirely.

NUJ highlights unlawful seizure of cameras by police

Reports of press photographers having their cameras seized and images deleted by police have frequented the news in the past few weeks, with the most recent case picked up by the National Union of Journalists.

On Saturday 31 July, NUJ member Carmen Valino was forced to hand over her camera to police after photographing a crime scene from behind the police cordon. She was allegedly accused of disrupting a police investigation.

According to a report by the NUJ, she was then made to delete the images before being told she could return at a later time.

A police Sergeant approached Valino telling her that she was disrupting a police investigation and to hand over her camera. After protesting to the Sergeant that she was in a public place, outside the cordon he had no right to take her camera, he grabbed her wrist and pulled out his handcuffs. Before he could put the cuffs on she handed him her camera. He then left for five minutes before coming back, bringing Valino inside the cordon and asking her to show him the images and deleting them. Valino was told that she could come back in a few hours to photograph the scene.

Similarly, earlier on in the month the BBC reported on Wokingham photographer Paul King who was taking pictures of a car crash when a traffic officer took his camera away. The officer then deleted King’s pictures before returning the camera to him.

Speaking to the BBC, he said the actions of the officer had cost him £400 in loss of earnings.

The officer came after me in a police car, grabbed hold of me and told me he was going to arrest me. He took my equipment but when it was brought back I had a look at the images and they were not there. I have made a formal complaint to the police and I am seeking legal advice from the NUJ. My role is to photograph news so the general public can see what’s going on.

Bob Satchwell from the Society of Editors will reportedly be raising concerns about the issue of forced deletion with the ACOP this week.

According to an experienced professional photographer we spoke to, software including Lexar Image Rescue or Sandisk RescuePro can be used to retrieve images that have been deleted. But they added that it is vital photographers do not load anymore photographs onto the card once the deletions have been made.

Is the local coffee shop the new newsroom?

Could the local coffee shop become the new newsroom for local reporters?

According to Mallary Tenore at PoynterOnline, journalists operating out of coffee shops in the US have been finding stories and making contacts like never before, as they quite literally integrate themselves within their community patch.

Many editors consider their best reporters the ones they never see — because they’re out in the community. Fisher at The Washington Post said the reporters who worked out of coffee shops for the day found sources and stories they may not have otherwise come across.

Rather than keeping reporters at their office desks, it appears that editors who let a journalist’s quick ‘cuppa’ seep into an all-day pursuit will reap the rewards. Journalism.co.uk reported in June how Freehold InJersey (FinJ) had moved its newsroom to a local cafe. They hoped this would invite stronger links between the community news site and its local readers. They even provide a free computer for readers to use.

Sipho Ngcobo charts a ‘frightening’ week for South African journalism

Following the arrest of Mzilikazi wa Afrika, Sipho Ngcobo, Sunday Times investigative journalist and former deputy editor of Business Report, reflects on what he says was a “frightening” week for journalists in South Africa.

South African media are currently battling the Protection of Information Bill, which according to Ngcobo is fuelling fears the government will be able to “clampdown and muzzle media”.

There is virtually no real clarity as what Mzilikazi wa Afrika was arrested for. But we worry, I worry about him. I worry about the profession and the business of media. I am worried sick about the future of the industry.

But, he adds, the growth in poor quality journalism does warrant improved regulation of the media, or else reporters should prepare for the “death” of the industry.

I cannot say I am totally surprised by the proposed Bill. There has been a lot of shoddy journalism taking place. Some of it has been outright criminal, extremely libellous, demeaning to individuals and families and even contemptuous to the courts. It has been so bad that I have often wondered what the future holds.

Lost Remote: Google Wave in the newsroom

August 9th, 2010 | 1 Comment | Posted by in Editors' pick, Online Journalism, Search

Steve Safran from Lost Remote adds a reflective take on Google Wave to the comment mounting up about it’s demise. According to Safran, the platform’s processes could be mirrored in the newsroom.

Back in September 2009, I wrote in the AR&D Newsletter: “Imagine starting a wave in your office about a news topic. People can constantly add to it, putting in the latest pictures, video and information. The assignment desk can contribute its findings and the reporters and producers have instant access, as well as the ability to add more. We don’t yet know how newsrooms can fully take advantage of this tool (and isn’t that wonderful?) but we do believe it will be a powerful way to have the entire staff work together.”

I was wrong.

Despite the product failing, says Safran, the experimentation should be admired.
