Nieman Journalism Lab: AP’s Tom Curley on the ‘oversupply’ of news – full text and audio

Ah, Nieman Journalism Lab, how we love your full transcripts and audio.

Publishers must take back control of their content from search engines, aggregators and bloggers, which have become the ‘preferred customer destinations for breaking news’, the Associated Press (AP) president and chief executive Tom Curley told an industry summit in Beijing last week.

But as Nieman Journalism Lab reported on Friday, Curley was ‘far more revealing’ when he spoke without a prepared text on October 6 at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong.

NJL is kindly sharing the audio and transcript.

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger on Trafigura’s ‘own goal’

Following an extraordinary attempt by lawyers Carter-Ruck to stop the Guardian reporting a parliamentary question, due to an existing ‘super-injunction,’ this came from the Guardian’s editor, Alan Rusbridger last night:

“Full circle… How the #Guardian is reporting #Trafigura own goal tonight http://tinyurl.com/yl4quac”

“That media organisations were unable to report a parliamentary question was due to a so-called ‘super-injunction’ obtained by the notorious law firm Carter-Ruck on behalf of Trafigura, a large London-based trading company. A ‘super-injunction’ is one which not only prevents any publication, but which is itself secret. Search in vain for the case in the court lists of the high court in London: it appears only as ‘RJW and SJW v The Guardian’. Under its terms, the Guardian was prevented from publishing a certain document: it was also banned from revealing that Trafigura had been to court to obtain an injunction. When we became aware that the existence of this order had been mentioned in a parliamentary question we sought to vary the terms of the injunction. We were advised by Carter-Ruck that publication would place us in contempt of court.”

Food journalists launch Zester Daily to combat loss of Gourmet

October 13th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by in Magazines

In a pre-emptive attempt to fill the gap that will be left when Conde Nast closes luxury food publication Gourmet, a collection of (predominantly North American) food and drink journalists have launched a new site.

Zester Daily will cover ‘all aspects of what we eat and drink’, according to a press release.

The site has been set-up by former LA Times writer Corie Brown and plans to create a network of professional contributors.

Most interestingly, the site says: “Zester Daily uses an innovative financial model, in which every writer is invested in its success.” The release suggests that, while the site will be primarily advertising-funded, writers will take part in some form of revenue-share. “[M]embers are rewarded based on their reputations and their ability to find an audience for their work,” says the release.
