Former Total Politics editor to start up PR company

Iain Dale reports that Total Politics’ political editor, Ben Duckworth, will replace Sarah MacKinlay as editor.

MacKinlay, who edited the magazine – which brands itself as non-partisan – for 18 months, plans to start up a new PR company called Journalista. Dale writes:

“I know what a challenge it is to start up a new business in a recession. Journalista, among other things, will be doing PR for politicians and other participants in the world of politics.”

Dale shares the traditional departing gift given to MacKinlay on his blog.

A widget on the site will launch a radio player streaming KISS 100 and MAGIC 105.4.

Public Agenda: Private newspapers in Africa hit by advertising slump

Newspapers across the world are in trouble, and private newspapers in Africa have been hit particularly hard, writes Amos Safo for Public Agenda. Using Ghana as an example, he reports that many newspapers are being suffocated out of the market:

“[T]hanks firstly, to the increasing price of newsprint and associated costs. Secondly many newspapers are being denied adverts not only by private companies, but state institutions. As you read this article, The Statesman has folded up temporarily to regroup. Other newspapers, including Public Agenda are heavily indebted to their printers to the extent that some have not paid their reporters for three months.”

There is lots of ground covered; MacAskill’s explanation of the Guardian’s approach in the States and his thoughts on differences between US and UK journalistic technique make particularly interesting reading.  An extract:

“[I]n some ways, the American system is more transparent, but because of the more adversarial system in Britain, sometimes more stories come out there. It’s a contradiction: the American system is more transparent, but in spite of that, an awful lot goes on behind the scenes that we never get to hear about.”

Here are a few of the most pertinent Reader’s Digest facts, as reported by Portfolio:

  • Current debt: $1.6 billion.
  • Amount of interest payment owed today: $27 million.
  • Number of US employees let go in 2009: 300.
  • Chapter by which its parent company is filing to protect itself: 11.

AP: Amish newspaper is a non-electric internet, says publisher

Keith Rathbun, publisher of the Ohio-based Amish newspaper, the Budget, isn’t worried about the threat to newspaper sales posed by the internet, reports the Associated Press. While the paper does have an online presence, http://www.thebudgetnewspaper.com/, only local news briefs are available.

“People call The Budget the Amish Internet,” Rathbun says. “It’s non-electric, it’s on paper, but it’s the same thing.”
