PressGazette: Wilmington – Press Gazette magazine to close

April 6th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted by in Editors' pick, Magazines

Statement from Wilmington, publishers of Press Gazette:

“Unfortunately Press Gazette, along with much of the profession, has suffered from a declining market during these years and its losses have increased. We have therefore been forced to conclude that the market required to sustain a commercially viable Press Gazette magazine no longer exists. The last hard copy edition of Press Gazette will therefore be the May edition which will be published in April.”

Update: Over at MediaGuardian Roy Greenslade reports that there will be no future news content on the site:

“There will be no journalism on the site,” said Les Kelly, the managing director of Wilmington’s media and entertainment division.

He added: “There will not be news coverage but we will develop the site to offer other services, such as training and freelance referrals.”

Mansfield News Journal: Why can’t newspapers go offline, asks reader

April 6th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted by in Editors' pick, Newspapers

An impractical suggestion for newspapers made in a letter to the Mansfield News Journal:

“Why can’t newspapers have this practice [online publishing] discontinued, and then they can go back to the old-fashioned way of publishing their paper and regain their subscribers and advertisers?”

Followed by a more legitimate concern about the relationship between online newspapers and democracy:

“If newspapers are forced to stop publishing, there won’t be any information to be placed on the internet.”

While there would still be information from a range of sources if newspapers were taken out of the picture, how would the quality of this information be perceived by the reader, such as the writer of this letter?

MPs’ travel expenses disparity highlighted by Guardian Open Platform projects

Tony Hirst, the independent developer who launched some of the first projects using the Guardian’s Open Platform, has again used the Data Store in an innovative way – leading to a new story about MPs’ expenses for the Guardian.

Hirst’s use of Google Maps shows that there are differences of up to £20,000 in neighbouring MPs’ travel expenses.

Hirst describes his work here which he developed after he discovered that the expenses data was being released via Data Store. Guardian technology editor Charles Arthur wrote about Hirst’s initial efforts and said “what we need now is a dataset which shows constituency distances from Westminster, so that we can compare that against travel…”

Hirst clearly couldn’t resist the challenge.
