Digital editors on Twitter – a list for networking and problem-solving

Since I started using Twitter I’ve always been amazed (and grateful) at how quickly calls for technological help and assistance with ideas and projects are answered. It’s one of the main reasons I’m a fan of Twitter.

There are plenty of media/journalist Twitter databases out there, but below are the beginnings of a list of digital editors on Twitter.

What do I mean by digital editor? In this instance, a journalist working primarily online, on web projects or co-ordinating multimedia output. The web editor of a newspaper site or magazine site, for example. It’s in no particular order, except for being divided by ‘traditional’ industry sectors at the moment, but if this isn’t useful, just let us know – would be great to get more international representatives too.

But the criteria for inclusion on the list are intentionally loose – this is aimed at networking, problem-solving and idea sharing between journalists working in the same space and similar roles. (Feel free to nominate any additions or drop us a tweet @journalismnews)

Editor&Publisher: National Post creates barcoding to access digital

The National Post has introduced a barcode system, which readers can scan with a mobile to access updated digital content – the first newspaper to do so in North America, it claims.

The paper is looking into using the barcoding, which makes use of technology from Scanbuy, for advertising and competitions.

ATS suggests the way in which the programmes are being broadcast hasn’t been transparent enough about the state aid.

But is there a way for news organisations to run paid-for stories in an ethically responsible way?

FTM: Google’s Eric Schmidt leaves newspaper conference ‘unscathed’

Followthemedia reports on Eric Schmidt’s address to the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) yesterday, in which the Google boss said he believed a mixture of ad-supported free content, micropayments and access-all-areas subscription will have to be included on the newspaper website of the future.

But according to FTM, Schmidt didn’t suggest enough ways for Google and newspaper publishers to work together – but then the publishers in the audience didn’t challenge him enough either.

“He [Schmidt] basically believes a newspaper will have its print and internet numbers right if readership is at least five times higher – preferably 10 times higher – on the web than it is in print,” says FTM.

“But again, he didn’t address, and no one asked him, how print was to stay in business with so much of the advertising spend diverted to the web and how maybe that 5:1 or 10:1 ratio could mean that the print financials were no longer viable.”

Nieman Journalism Lab: News content is ‘a stream’

In a digital newsroom or organisation the basic unit of news is no longer the story, but less rigidly defined, writes Martin Langeveld.

“The metaphor of content as a cascading stream means there is no unit – a stream is a stream, it has no discernible building blocks. And it means that content doesn’t sit still. It is never static, but always changing,” he explains.

The cascade can be started by journalists’ own newsgathering or from a wealth of UGC and will no longer end at publication by the newsroom, but instead flow into social networks and blogs, creating a new stage for that content.

Audioboo debuts in Guardian article

The Guardian’s inventive use of mobile application Audioboo during last week’s G20 news coverage isn’t the end of the paper’s experiments with the audio recording service.

According to a tweet from Guardian journalist Matthew Weaver, who was posting sound clips or ‘boos’ frequently during the summit, today’s article on the Tamil protests in London is the first time a recording from Audioboo has been embedded in a news article on the site.

Nice.

Extra nice is a Twitter update from Audioboo CEO Mark Rock suggesting that a version of the service for non-iPhone users is near at hand…
