DNA09: Journalism.co.uk coverage from the digital conference

March 4th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by in Events, Online Journalism

So, here we are in the land of waffles and fruity beer, live from DNA 2009 in Brussels. Have a look at the agenda here. It should be two days of varied, and if we’re lucky, heated discussion – just to keep things lively.

On Day Two, Journalism.co.uk’s very own Laura Oliver will be participating in a panel on Twitter: is it possible to tell the news in 140 characters?

We’ll be live-Tweeting from @journalism_live, with news updates from @journalismnews. You can follow an updating blog post tracking the Twitter conversation (#dna09) or a post with an embedded live-blog from the De Fontys Hogeschool Journalistek.

Alternatively, try out this socialplume page which will also be tracking the conversations.

If you’ve got any questions you’d like to ask any of the participants on the list just drop laura or judith @journalism.co.uk a line.

Enjoy!

A handbook to online journalism

A quick heads-up on this resource: an online reference guide for journalists: the Bighow: handbook to online journalism.

It’s quite a rough product, but some really nice touches – like the ‘quotes for journalists’ and the guides to online writing style. The ‘seven types of stories you should be doing more often’ is a nice feature too.

It’s created by Pramit Singh who blogs at http://mediavidea.blogspot.com.

We haven’t fully explored the options yet, but it looks like you can contribute yourself, once you’ve created a profile.

In a visually interesting post, Berlin, who used to be designer and assistant design director at the newspaper, shows his appeciation for the things he learnt there.

TheAustralian: ‘Major gap’ in whistleblower legislation

“A major gap in the proposed whistleblower protection legislation has been highlighted by the case of an army corporal,” the Australian newspaper reports.

The corporal is facing discharge for being obese after he spoke out to a major newspaper, the report continues.

“Queensland’s Sunday Mail last week broke the story about the unnamed 15-year army veteran appealing against his discharge after being found to be obese in a bodymass index test.”

The corporal “is now facing three disciplinary charges relating to talking to the media, which are expected to be heard today. But he would not get any protection under the current or proposed whistleblower protection measures.”

It’s Hyperlocal™, says HelloMetro.com

March 2nd, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted by in Legal

As part of a release announcing the recruitment of 17 content editors across its network of local news and information site, HelloMetro.com has also declared that it has trademarked Hyperlocal™.

“With this new distinction, the company continues its quest to provide the most up-to-date local and Hyperlocal™ information for its users,” the release states.

In the UK a trademarked should not, according to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), are not registrable if they:

  • describe your goods or services or any characteristics of them, for example, marks which show the quality, quantity, purpose, value or geographical origin of your goods or services;
  • have become customary in your line of trade;
  • are not distinctive

Things may be different in the US (am still looking for a definitive, easy-to-read guide of TMs), but surely the UK criteria of not being ‘customary in your line of trade’ should come in here? Hyperlocal has passed into common media parlance – see this morning’s news of the New York Times’ local project.

Plus – is the phrase already trademarked in the US? and what’s the point?
