CrainsNewYork: Daily News refutes blog post predicting its demise

There’s been a lot of interest in this list which appeared on Time.com: ‘The 10 Most Endangered Newspapers in America’ (originally from the 24/7 Wall Street blog, it seems).

Now, this, from Crain’s New York Business.com: a rebuttal from the Daily News chief executive, Marc Kramer. ‘Every so-called fact [in the post] is wrong,’ Crain’s reports Kramer as saying. Full story at this link…

Earlier in the week, a post on Cleveland.com reported the Plain Dealer publisher Terrance Egger’s comments, which also dismiss the predictions.

NUJ Release: Johnston Press strikers go south

“Strikers from Yorkshire demonstrated at a London PR firm today as their employers – Johnston Press – announced more big profits,” a release from the National Union of Journalists said.

“The Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post journalists were joined by NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear as they leafleted JP chiefs and city workers about their fight against job cuts,” the report continues.

BBCWorldService: New language micro-sites for Africa

Further to our report on developments at the BBC College of Journalism, here are links to five new language micro-sites for Africa – collaborations between the College and the BBC World Service:

Hausa, Portuguese for Africa, Somali, Kinyarwanda and Kirundi.

The announcement said: “The College of Journalism’s language project started in January 2008 and has since then launched 23 external language sites. These include Arabic, Farsi, Chinese and Hindi.”

This, from Australian news broadcaster, ABC: “a survey of Australian journalism students found 90 per cent of students do not like reading the newspaper, preferring to source news from commercial television or online media.

ABC reports that “the journalists of the future are rapidly moving away from traditional news services, saying they are impractical compared to new media.”

Reuters: ‘Johnston Press 2009 ad revenues slump 36 per cent’

“British regional newspaper group Johnston Press axed its final 2008 dividend on Wednesday after saying its advertising revenues in 2009 to date were down 36 per cent,” Reuters reports.

“The group, which has been especially hard hit by its high exposure to local classified advertising and sectors such as employment, housing and motoring, posted 2008 results in line with forecasts, with operating profit down 28 per cent.”
