Comment Is Free: Brother of murdered Sri Lankan newspaper editor speaks out

February 10th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted by in Editors' pick, Press freedom and ethics

“The tremendous wave of worldwide emotion that has been created by his death has embarrassed this nation. Whether his death will bring the liberty enjoyed elsewhere to this island, or whether it will slip further into repression, is yet to be seen,” writes Lal Wickrematunge, brother of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, who was murdered last month.

Poynter Online: How to ‘get off the free-content treadmill’

February 10th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted by in Editors' pick, Newspapers, Online Journalism

With 20 million monthly unique visitors, the New York Times could make $240 million from charging these users just $1.00 a month on average, according to Poynter’s calculations.

“Beyond being a gamble worth taking because of the potentially significant payoff, there is no realistic alternative to charging for quality content that anyone has presented,” says Steve Brill, who goes on to set out his plan for getting off ‘the free-content treadmill’.

ITN launches iPhone news app

February 9th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted by in Mobile

ITN has launched a free news application for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

It is the first, video-focused news application created for the Apple products and its special offline function allows users to access UK, world and sports news when they are out of wifi range, according to a press release from ITN.

“News is one of the biggest services on handsets and ITN has built a great reputation as a provider of high quality videojournalism on mobile,” said Nicholas Wheeler, managing director of multimedia division ITN On, in the release.

The application is available to download at the iTunes’ store – and at time of writing is the seventh most downloaded free news app from iTunes.

FT.com is also looking to tap into the iPhone market with plans to introduce a new site for the handset.

Bivings’ top 10 US newspapers: missing the news point?

February 9th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted by in Online Journalism

The Bivings Group‘s recently released Bivings Report of the top 10 US newspaper sites in 2008 consisted of:

  1. New York Times
  2. Washington Post
  3. Wall Street Journal
  4. Florida Times-Union
  5. Philadelphia Inquirer
  6. USA Today
  7. St Paul Pioneer Press
  8. Atlanta Journal-Constitution
  9. Arizona Republic
  10. Columbus Dispatch

The study, which picks the list based on usability, design and web features of the US’ 100 largest newspapers, is purposefully limited to covering US-based, newspaper sites.

But as one commenter on the Bivings blog says, ‘No Mention of any of MY best news sites’ – he then goes on to list his own top 10, including Huffington Post and EveryBlock (which another commenter then takes as the Bivings’ list).

Is comparing like-for-like really that useful – newspapers aren’t just competing with each other – or other mainstream news organisations – anymore. What the Bivings Group rates the sites on may be completely different from the readers’ criteria – particularly if these comments are anything to go by.

It reminds me of this Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) study from 2007, which found a different news agenda on UGC sites than mainstream platforms (e.g the agenda decided by journalists).

Users’ online agendas are different (and that’s not to say news organisations should completely adhere to UGC inspired schedules – that’s a debate for another day) and influenced by a plethora of different online sources. As such their expectations of newspaper sites will be shaped by the other tools and information websites they use. Ranking newspaper websites against each other won’t deliver the kind of comparisons that these sites can take away and use.

Don’t Regret The Error: a journalist’s checklist

February 9th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by in Journalism

To promote his new book, Regret The Error’s Craig Silverman has come up with a handy checklist all reporters should use when research/writing/publishing a story.

The free-to-download list ranges from the very standard (checking the spelling of people/place names etc) to more web-focused checkpoints (check URLs are working, save links from research).

“Checklists help reporters and editors increase their level of accuracy (…) Seriously, it’s one of the easiest things a journalist can do to prevent factual errors,” adds Silverman.

PatrolMag: ‘Dear Jay Rosen, you give me hope’

A love letter from the deputy editor of Patrol. Following Jay Rosen’s little gripe at a follower via Twitter, Harris applauds Rosen’s ‘mean’ nature.

“You’re mean. You were mean to a Tweeter,” she writes.

“You give me hope that my jaunt in the media wilderness won’t last 40 years and that I’ll come to the Promised Land – maybe not with a bottomless Condé Nast expense account but with the opportunity to do what I love and serve the public and still maybe eat every once in a while.”

García Media: Newsweek’s new approach

February 9th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted by in Editors' pick, Magazines

“With the announcement that Newsweek is planning to rethink itself to appeal to a smaller, more elite, but devoted, audience, two themes emerge that are worth considering,” writes Dr Mario R. Garcia.

Firstly, the editor Jon Meacham’s statement that “If we don’t have something original to say, we won’t. The drill of chasing the week’s news to add a couple of hard-fought new details is not sustainable.”

Secondly, that editorially, ‘Newsweek’s plan calls for moving in the direction of not just analysis and commentary, but an opinionated, prescriptive or offbeat take on events.’

Two selections from the NYTimes, and maybe to send in @mediaisthriving’s direction: a ‘resilient strategy for [NY] Times despite toll of a recession,’ and this, ‘a site chronicles ways to adapt in the downturn’: “Two editors who were laid off from Condé Nast Portfolio could rage against the recession, but instead they hitched their wagon to the downturn by starting up a Web site, Recessionwire.com,” NYTimes.com reports.
