Reuters: Connecticut papers saved by new investor

Two Connecticut dailies facing closure have been rescued after a new buyer for the titles was found.

Michael Schroeder, owner of Central Connecticut Communications, will buy The Bristol Press and The Herald of New Britain at a time when some media commentators are calling for US state aid to help ailing newspapers.

Prosecution argued that real-time coverage of trial of Alex Midette could prejudice case, but Judge Lael Montgomery has given the go ahead for laptops and mobiles to be used in court.

“I think there are other manageable options and less restrictive options than shutting down the flow of information during the trial,” she is reported to have said, adding that jurors and witnesses would be informed not to read news reports about the trial.

A news release that claims job cuts by Canadian media owners could lead to ‘our news becoming nothing more than rewritten press releases’.

“The decisions taken this fall will lead to more centralization of news in Canada, fewer opportunities for Canadians to learn from different voices and will threaten the very existence of quality local and investigative reporting,” says Canadian Association of Journalists president Mary Agnes Welch.

The CAJ fears “journalism in Canada is reaching a tipping point where the decline in the quality of news content will lead to an industry death spiral of less content, smaller audiences, and yet more cuts”.
